The Colt of Manki and the Salvation of a Desirous Bawa in Gadhpur
In Gadhpur, the colt born to the celebrated mare Manki was extraordinarily handsome and graceful. Right from his early days, his charming appearance won the hearts of everyone, and all looked upon him with immense affection. Shriji Maharaj had specifically instructed that he be nurtured with nutritious feed, so everyone cared for him devotedly. One day, Naja Jogiya harnessed him with a saddle, led him into the Darbargadh, and trained him with a whip to master the elegant, rhythmic reval (trotting) gait. Exactly at that time, a horse merchant arrived in Gadhpur. Having heard praises of this exceptional colt, the merchant came to the Darbargadh, and upon seeing the colt, offered to purchase him immediately for seventeen hundred rupees in cash—a remarkable sum in those days. Shri Hari, however, outright refused to sell him.
Shri Hari then had the colt brought near the northern portico (veranda), had an ornate conch-inlaid saddle (shankhaladi palan) placed upon his back, fastened His waistcloth, and mounted the colt. As the captivating Divine Rider (Manigar Asvar) sat atop the colt, an enchanting and majestic splendor unfolded. Shri Hari rode the colt around the sacred neem tree (Limbtaru) in a swift reval gait. In a short while, both the colt and Shri Hari were glistening with perspiration. Droplets of sweat on Shri Hari’s radiant, fair cheeks shone like precious pearls under the sunbeams. All the holy saints, devotees, and Kathi Darbars stood in the courtyard, mesmerized by this divine darshan. At that moment, a Charan (Gadhvi, royal bard) of a Kathi Darbar was also standing nearby among the horse merchants. Shri Hari gracefully leaped down from the colt, held the reins in His hand, and led the colt straight to the Gadhvi. With the divine detachment embodying “Om Shri Nispruhaya Namah” (obeisance to the Lord who is utterly devoid of worldly desires), Shri Hari presented the priceless colt to him as a charitable gift! The Kathi Darbars watched in sheer astonishment, wide-eyed in disbelief. Yet, in the presence of Shri Hari, no one dared utter a single word against His divine wish, even though such an invaluable colt had been gifted away. A reverent silence fell over the entire Darbargadh.
As afternoon gave way to dusk (rondho dhalta), an assembly gathered beneath the neem tree. Shri Hari sat upon a wooden cot adorned with silk-cotton mattresses (mashru) and plush bolsters. Eminent saints like Sadguru Muktanand Swami, Kathi chieftains including Sura Bapu, Somla Khachar, and Dada Khachar, along with Sankhyayogi women such as Laduba and Jivuba seated at a distance, were present. An absolute stillness enveloped the assembly; pondering over the magnificent colt gifted away, not a single person spoke a word.
Knowing everyone’s unexpressed inner sorrow through His omniscience (antaryami), Shri Hari subtly gestured to His faithful attendant, Parshad Bhaguji. Taking the cue, Bhaguji spoke, “Once, Maharaj and I visited a distant village and halted under the soothing shade of a tree at a Bawa’s (ascetic’s) hermitage. The Bawa earnestly pleaded with Shriji Maharaj to accept a meal, but Maharaj declined and we both resumed our journey. Craving to feed Shri Hari, the Bawa ran along the path chasing after us, weeping bitterly, and cried out: ‘Today, as the supreme reward of my entire life, Supreme Lord Shri Swaminarayan has graced my humble hermitage! I harbored a deep desire to prepare food with my own hands and serve the Lord, yet He did not even stay to partake of my offering! How wretched and unfortunate am I that I could not serve Prabhu with a meal in this lifetime!’ Expressing immense remorse with genuine devotion, the Bawa wept profusely.”
Bhaguji continued, “As we walked along the road, I asked Maharaj why He had declined the meal despite the Bawa’s sincere love. Shri Hari revealed to me: ‘Although this Bawa had donned the attire of a renunciant, he harbored intense carnal desires (kama / vasana). Therefore, We could not accept food prepared by his hands. Upon casting off his mortal frame, he was reborn through the womb of the mare Manki to take the body of this colt. Now, this Gadhvi will keep him as a breeding stallion. In this equine form, he will indulge his dormant carnal desires with mares from various lands, thereby exhausting and completely uprooting that lingering lust. Thereafter, upon shedding this body, he will be blessed with a human birth in the holy Satsang, become desireless (nirvasanik), liberate his soul, and ultimately attain the divine abode of Akshardham. Without understanding this profound divine mystery, all of you are grieving in vain simply because the colt was donated to the Gadhvi.’”
Upon hearing this divine truth, all sorrow vanished from the hearts of the assembly, and Sura Bapu along with all the Kathi Darbars were filled with joyful peace and satisfaction as before.
