Lavji Darji of Gondal and the Insightful Caution of Gunatitanand Swami

Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami arrived at the Gondal mandir during his spiritual travels (satsang vicharan). Near the entrance of the village was the shop of Lavji Darji, a tailor who had come into the association of the holy sadhus. He earned his livelihood through tailoring, and since the mandir was situated right nearby, he would visit every morning and evening for darshan and devotedly sweep the mandir premises. However, Lavji harbored a deep worldly infatuation for an attractive woman in the village. Every day, a worldly desire lingered in his mind: ‘If only this woman’s husband would pass away, I could marry her and establish a household with her.’ He even performed service in the mandir with this ulterior motive, wishing that his seva would fulfill his desire to marry her.

Knowing that Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami was an eminent, spiritually accomplished saint whose words bore divine power (vachansiddha), Lavji would enthusiastically run to the mandir every day to serve. Gunatitanand Swami, being omniscient (antaryami), perceived the hidden desire of his mind. One day, Swami cautioned him with a gentle reminder, “O Lavji! You are performing this seva, but do it with pure and noble devotion, understand?” Giving this cautionary advice, Swami departed on his spiritual tour a few days later.

As fate would have it, within six to eight months, the woman’s husband passed away. Lavji entered into remarriage (naatru) with her and settled into family life. However, as soon as his worldly domestic life began, Lavji gradually drifted away from satsang. Despite the mandir being right next door, he stopped coming even for daily darshan.

About a year later, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami visited Gondal mandir once again during his satsang vicharan. The evening aarti was performed, and the spiritual discourses (katha-varta) concluded, but Swami did not see Lavji throughout the entire day. Swami inquired of the devotees, “Lavji used to come to the mandir regularly; why does he not come anymore?” The devotees then narrated the entire account in detail. Upon hearing this, Gunatitanand Swami remarked, “The soul’s worldly desire has been fulfilled, so why would he sweep the temple now! There are formidable fortresses (obstacles) that obstruct a soul from walking toward God. In this world, relatives, family, parents, woman, wealth, the senses, and the inner mind (antahkaran)—these are all such forts. Furthermore, there are two types of people in the mandir and satsang fellowship: those who stay anchored on their own, and those who have to be constantly sustained and kept by others! Between these two, each person must examine their own standing.”
