એક વખત શ્રીહરિ ઢળતી બપોરે કાઠી દરબારો સાથે ઘોડેસવાર થઈને દેવળિયા ગામ પધાર્યા. દરબાર જાલમસંઘ બાપુ અને તેમનાં ધર્મપત્ની કેશાબાંએ સર્વેનું ભાવભર્યું સ્વાગત કર્યું.

દેવળિયાના કેશાબાંનો પ્રેમ અને માણકી ઘોડીને સંતાડ્યાનો વિનોદ
એક વખત શ્રીહરિ ઢળતી બપોરે કાઠી દરબારો સાથે ઘોડેસવાર થઈને દેવળિયા ગામ પધાર્યા. દરબાર જાલમસંઘ બાપુ અને તેમનાં પરમ ભક્ત ધર્મપત્ની કેશાબાંએ સર્વેનું ભાવભર્યું સ્વાગત કર્યું.
શ્રીહરિએ કહ્યું, “કેશાબાં! અમારે આગળ જવાની ઘણી ઉતાવળ છે, તેથી પાછલી રાત્રે જ અમે નીકળી જઈશું; કોઈ રોકવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરશો નહીં!” કેશાબાં હસીને બોલ્યાં, “હે મહારાજ! આપ તો સર્વસમર્થ ભગવાન છો, પણ સમય આવે પારખાં થશે!” સંધ્યાકાળે કેશાબાં ઘરકામમાંથી પરવારી ઘોડશાળમાં ગયાં. માણકી ઘોડીના મસ્તક પર વહાલથી હાથ ફેરવીને કહ્યું, “મારી બહેન માણકી! આજે તારે મારી આબરૂ રાખવાની છે. શ્રીહરિ સવારે જલદી જવા માગે છે, પણ મારે તેમને પ્રેમથી જમાડવા છે; માટે હું બોલાવું ત્યાં સુધી તું ચૂપ રહેજે!” મુક્તરાજ માણકી પ્રેમ સમજી ગઈ અને કેશાબાંએ તેને છોડીને પોતાના ઓરડાની બાજુના અંધારા ઓરડામાં બાંધી દીધી.
કેશાબાંએ બ્રાહ્મણ રસોઈયાને વહેલો જગાડી દૂધપાક, પૂરી અને શાકનો ઉત્તમ થાળ તૈયાર કરાવ્યો. સવારે ચાર વાગ્યે કાઠી દરબારો જાગીને તૈયાર થઈ ગયા. નાજા જોગીયા શ્રીહરિ માટે માણકીને લાવવા ઘોડશાળમાં ગયા, પણ ત્યાં માણકી ન મળી! તેમણે દરબાર જાલમસંઘને કહ્યું, “બાપુ! માણકી ઘોડશાળમાં નથી!” સમગ્ર દરબારગઢમાં દોડધામ મચી ગઈ. શ્રીજીમહારાજ પણ તૈયાર થઈને પધાર્યા અને કેશાબાંને રજા માગતાં કહ્યું, “બાં! અમે હવે નીકળીએ છીએ.” ત્યાં તો નાજા જોગીયા હાંફતા આવ્યા, “મહારાજ! માણકી ક્યાંય જડતી નથી!” કેશાબાંએ નિર્દોષ ભાવે કહ્યું, “હે મહારાજ! આ તો ગજબ થયો! અમારા દરબારમાંથી ઘોડી ચોરાઈ જાય તો અમારી આબરૂ જાય!”
સૌએ આખા ગામમાં શોધ કરી પણ માણકીનું પગેરું ન મળ્યું. મહારાજે હસીને કહ્યું, “ગઢડામાં લાડુબા-જીવુબાએ અને કારિયાણીમાં મીણબાઈએ જેમ અમારું ધાર્યું ન થવા દીધું, તેમ આજે કેશાબાંએ પણ અમને હરાવ્યા લાગે છે!” જાલમસંઘ બોલ્યા, “મહારાજ! માણકી આપના મનની વાત જાણે છે; આપ સાદ કરો એટલે તરત હણહણશે.” શ્રીહરિએ આંગણામાં ઊભા રહી “માણેક… માણકી!” કહી સાદ પાડ્યો, પણ માણકી સહેજ પણ ન બોલી! ત્યારે પૂજારી ધ્યાનદાસ વૈરાગીએ આવીને હસતાં કહ્યું, “મહારાજ! કેશાબાં કહે છે કે જો આપ પ્રેમથી થાળ જમીને જવાનું વચન આપો, તો માણકીનું પગેરું હમણાં જ મળી જાય!” સર્વજ્ઞ શ્રીહરિ મંદ મંદ હસી પડ્યા: “કેશાબાં! લાવો અમારી માણકી, અમે હવે જમીને જ જઈશું!” આ શબ્દો બોલાતાં જ ઓરડામાંથી માણકી જોરથી હણહણી ઊઠી!
શ્રીહરિએ માણકીની પીઠ પર હાથ ફેરવતાં કહ્યું, “માણકી! આજે તેં કેશાબાંની બહેનપણી બનીને અમારા સાદ છતાં અવાજ ન કર્યો!” કેશાબાં આંખમાં હર્ષાશ્રુ સાથે બોલ્યાં, “હે પ્રભુ! આપ જેમ ભક્તવત્સલ છો તેમ આપની આ માણકી પણ ભક્તવત્સલ છે!” શ્રીજીમહારાજે સર્વે સંતો-દરબારો સાથે પ્રેમથી થાળ જમીને કેશાબાંની ભક્તિની મુક્તકંઠે પ્રશંસા કરી.

एक बार श्रीजी महाराज ढलती दोपहर में काठी दरबारों के साथ अश्वारूढ़ होकर देवळिया गाँव पधारे। दरबार जालमसंघ बापू और उनकी अनन्य भक्त पत्नी केशाबां ने सभी का भावभीना स्वागत किया।
श्रीहरि ने पहले ही कह दिया, “केशाबां! हमें आगे जाने की बहुत जल्दी है, अतः हम ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में ही प्रस्थान कर जाएँगे; कोई हमें रोकने का प्रयास न करे!” केशाबां मुस्कुराईं, “महाराज! आप समर्थ भगवान हैं, किंतु समय आने पर परीक्षा होगी!” संध्या ढलने पर केशाबां अस्तबल में पहुँचीं। मानकी घोड़ी के माथे पर हाथ फेरकर भावुक होकर बोलीं, “मेरी बहन मानकी! आज तुम्हें मेरी लाज रखनी है। प्रभु शीघ्र जाना चाहते हैं, किंतु मुझे उन्हें प्रेम से भोजन कराना है; अतः जब तक मैं न कहूँ, तुम तनिक भी हिनहिनाना मत!” दिव्य मुक्तात्मा मानकी प्रेम की भाषा समझ गई। केशाबां ने उसे चुपचाप अपने शयनकक्ष के पीछे वाले कमरे में बाँध दिया।
केशाबां ने रसोइए को जगाकर खीर-पूरी और शाक का दिव्य थाल तैयार करवाया। प्रातः चार बजे सभी काठी दरबार तैयार हो गए। नाजा जोगिया जब मानकी को लेने अस्तबल गए, तो वहाँ मानकी नहीं थी! चारों ओर हड़कंप मच गया। श्रीजी महाराज ने प्रस्थान हेतु केशाबां से विदा माँगी। तभी नाजा जोगिया दौड़ते हुए आए, “महाराज! मानकी अस्तबल में नहीं है, पूरे गाँव में कहीं नहीं मिल रही!” केशाबां ने भोला बनकर कहा, “महाराज! यह तो अनर्थ हो गया, हमारे दरबार से घोड़ी चोरी हो जाए तो हमारी प्रतिष्ठा धूल में मिल जाएगी!”
सबने बहुत ढूँढा किंतु मानकी का सुराग न मिला। महाराज मुस्कुराए, “गढ़डा में लाडूबा-जीवूबा और कारियाणी में मीणबाई की तरह आज केशाबां ने भी हमें प्रेम के बंधन में बाँध लिया है!” जालमसंघ बोले, “प्रभु! मानकी आपके मन की गति जानती है, आप पुकारेंगे तो वह अवश्य बोलेगी।” महाराज ने आँगन में खड़े होकर “माणेक… मानकी!” कहकर पुकारा, किंतु केशाबां को दिए वचन के कारण मानकी मौन रही! तभी मंदिर के पुजारी ध्यानदास ने आकर कहा, “महाराज! केशाबां कहती हैं कि यदि आप भोजन करके जाने का वचन दें, तो मानकी तुरंत मिल जाएगी!” श्रीहरि हँस पड़े, “केशाबां! ले आइए हमारी मानकी, हम भोजन करके ही जाएँगे!” यह शब्द सुनते ही उस गुप्त कमरे से मानकी जोर से हिनहिना उठी!
महाराज ने मानकी को सहलाते हुए कहा, “मानकी! आज तू केशाबां की सखी बन गई और हमारे बुलाने पर भी नहीं बोली!” केशाबां अश्रुपूरित नेत्रों से बोलीं, “हे नाथ! जैसे आप भक्तवत्सल हैं, वैसे ही आपकी यह मानकी भी भक्तवत्सल है!” श्रीजी महाराज ने संतों और दरबारों सहित तृप्त होकर थाल आरोगकर केशाबां के निश्चल प्रेम की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की।

Keshaba of Devaliya: Devotional Love and Hiding Manki the Mare
In the golden twilight of a late afternoon, Bhagwan Swaminarayan rode into the village of Devaliya accompanied by an entourage of Kathi chieftains. Ruler Jalam Sangh Bapu and his deeply devoted consort, Keshaba, welcomed the divine party with joyous reverence.
At dinner, Shrihari announced: “Keshaba! We are pressed for time and must depart before dawn; please do not attempt to delay Us!” Keshaba smiled mischievously, “O Lord! You are the almighty Master, but when the time comes, love shall be put to the test!” At nightfall, Keshaba quietly slipped into the stables. Stroking the velvety muzzle of Maharaj’s beloved mare, Manki, she whispered: “Dear sister Manki! You must protect my honor today. The Lord intends to rush off in the dead of night, but I have prepared a grand feast for Him. Even if Maharaj calls you, please remain utterly silent!” Understanding the language of pure love, the celestial mare nudged her shoulder. Keshaba untied Manki and hid her in a quiet storeroom beside her own chamber.
Rising well before midnight, Keshaba had a lavish feast of sweet rice pudding (dudhpak), crispy puris, and spiced curries prepared. By four in the morning, the Kathi chieftains had bathed, performed their devotions, and stood ready to march. Attendant Naja Jogiya rushed to the stables to saddle Manki, only to find the stall completely empty! Panic rippled through the courtyard. Maharaj emerged and approached Keshaba to take His leave: “Mother, we are departing now.” Just then, Naja ran up gasping, “Maharaj! Manki is nowhere to be found!” Feigning shock, Keshaba exclaimed, “Good heavens, Maharaj! If your prized mare is stolen from our courtyard, our royal honor will be dragged through the mud!”
Search parties combed the village, but no trace was found. Maharaj chuckled knowingly: “Just as Laduba and Jivuba in Gadhada, and Minbai in Kariyani, bested My wishes with their affection, it seems Keshaba has outwitted Us today!” Jalam Sangh said, “Maharaj, Manki knows Your heart; if You call out, she will surely whinny.” Standing in the courtyard, Shrihari called loudly: “Manek… Manki!” Yet true to her promise to Keshaba, the faithful mare did not utter a sound! Presently, temple priest Dhyandas approached with a smile: “Maharaj! Keshaba sends word that if You promise to enjoy her hot morning feast before leaving, she will immediately find your lost mare.” Conceding defeat to genuine devotion, Shrihari laughed heartily: “Keshaba! Bring forth Our Manki, We shall certainly dine before departing!” The moment those words echoed across the courtyard, Manki whinnied joyously from the secret room!
Stroking Manki’s mane, Maharaj remarked playfully, “Manki! You allied with Keshaba today and refused to answer even My call!” With joyful tears, Keshaba replied, “O Lord! Just as You are bound by the love of Your devotees, so too is Your faithful mare!” Shriji Maharaj and His entire retinue sat for the magnificent feast, praising Keshaba’s pure-hearted love that conquered the Lord of the universe.
