Minabai of Kariyana and the Simple Loving Meal of Shriji Maharaj
Once during the monsoon season, Shri Hari arrived at the darbar of Deha Khachar in the village of Kariyana. Outside, rain was pouring down in torrents, and Shri Hari stood with soaked garments on the veranda (osari) of devotee Minabai’s house. Seeing Shri Hari completely drenched, Minabai was at a loss as to what dry garments she could offer Him to wear. Just then, His dedicated attendant, Mulji Brahmachari, arrived and exclaimed, “Maharaj, please stand as You are for a moment; one must not sit on the cot in soaking wet clothes!” Shri Hari smiled gently at His attendant’s affectionate concern. Mulji Brahmachari always carried dry clothes for Shri Hari safely stored inside an earthen vessel; he immediately took them out and offered them to Maharaj, who changed into the dry attire. Minabai then arranged a wooden cot on the veranda, and Shri Hari seated Himself comfortably upon it.
Mulji Brahmachari then went to the river to wash Maharaj’s soaked clothes. Shri Hari fondly said, “Minabai, I am very hungry; if any food is ready, please bring it.” Minabai replied with humility, “O Maharaj! Rain is pouring incessantly right now, and rainwater has flooded right into the kitchen, submerging the front of the hearth (chulha). If You can kindly wait a little while, I will break a dry earthen pot, fashion a makeshift hearth out of it, and prepare Your thaal (meal) immediately!”
While Shri Hari waited patiently, Minabai brought a large, dry earthen pot, broke it, and filled its base with ashes. Placing dried cow-dung cakes at the bottom, she lit the kindling of dry twigs and shrubs using a spark from a flint stone. Placing a clay pan over the fire, she baked three or four fresh, piping-hot bajra rotlas (pearl millet flatbreads) infused with pure devotion.
Serving the meal in a traditional bronze plate, she laid out the hot rotlas, a generous ball of freshly churned white butter, sweet jaggery, and spicy pickled green chillies, alongside a bowl filled with fresh warm milk. She seated Shri Hari right there on the veranda to dine. By that time, Mulji Brahmachari had returned from washing the clothes at the river; he took out some sukhadi (a sweet snack) that he kept in his travel pouch and served it lovingly to Shri Hari. Brahmachari gently fanned Shri Hari with his sacred cloth (abotiya) while attending to Him with boundless love as Maharaj relished the simple, devotional meal.
While dining, Shri Hari playfully asked, “Brahmachari, don’t you wish to change out of your wet clothes?” To this, Brahmachari replied with intimate wit, “O Maharaj! When have You ever permitted me to keep spare clothes that I could change into? Our life simply moves along just like this!” Hearing this endearing exchange between the Lord and His loving attendant, Minabai, sitting inside by the doorstep, could not help but burst into joyful laughter.
