Gandharva Sadaram in Vadnagar and the Rhythmic Sound of Bells from the Mouth

Once, Shri Hari arrived in the town of Vadnagar in Gujarat, accompanied by holy saints and devotees. The devotees welcomed Shri Hari with a grand ceremonial procession (samaiyu) and brought Him reverently into the heart of the town. Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami and Vaishnavanand Swami accompanied Maharaj; they prepared a loving food offering (thaal), which Shri Hari sanctified and partook of. Thereafter, all the saints and devotees were served with great affection.

After concluding His meal, Shri Hari rested and then graced the assembly. The devotees of the town worshipped Him with sandalwood paste and fragrant flowers. The entire pilgrim party (sangh) stayed by the lakeside on the outskirts of the town. On the western side stood a temple of Mahadev (Lord Shiva), where a divine assembly gathered.

Shortly afterward, a group of accomplished traditional musicians and singers (Gandharvas) passed by, carrying their musical instruments. Among them was a Gandharva named Sadaram, who was wise, remarkably skilled in singing and instrumental music, and a sincere spiritual seeker (mumukshu). The moment he beheld the divine form of Shri Hari, a deep yearning arose in his heart to offer his musical art at Shri Hari’s lotus feet. He said to his fellow musicians, “We constantly sing and play to feed ourselves and our families. But today, the One whom the world reveres as the manifest Supreme Lord is right here before us! We have been blessed with a golden opportunity to present our art before the manifest Lord Himself. Let us all take advantage of this exceedingly rare fortune.”

Saying this, all the musicians approached Shri Hari and bowed humbly at His lotus feet. Shri Hari warmly welcomed them and had them seated upon the carpet. The musicians immediately began tuning and playing their instruments—the vanja (stringed instrument), dukad (percussion), and sarod—filling the air with melodious singing.

At that moment, Shri Hari subtly gestured to Shastri Lakshmiram Derashri, who was seated in the assembly, prompting him to produce the sound of ankle-bells (ghughra / ghungroos) from his mouth. Shastriji immediately began creating the rhythmic chiming of bells with his mouth. Hearing the exquisite, perfectly synchronized jingling of bells, the Gandharvas were utterly astonished! They looked all around in bewilderment, wondering where the sound was coming from. No one wore bells on their hands or feet, yet someone was producing this flawless rhythmic accompaniment. They searched intently across the assembly.

Gandharva Sadaram respectfully asked Shri Hari, “Maharaj, who is playing these ankle-bells?” Shri Hari smiled and replied, “It is Shastri Lakshmiram who is playing them.”

Shri Hari was immensely pleased; He garlanded Shastri Lakshmiram and placed His benevolent hand upon his head in blessing. Shastri Lakshmiram humbly said to the musicians, “I know nothing of music on my own. It was solely by the divine grace of Shri Hari that I was able to produce the sound of bells. Otherwise, I understand none of the classical musical ragas, nor do I possess the skill to accompany accomplished artists like you. The One seated before us is the Supreme Lord of infinite universes, and I am merely His humble servant.”

Hearing this selfless humility, the Gandharvas were deeply inspired and filled with profound reverence. They prayed, “O Maharaj! We have a sincere desire to hear the classical chautaal rhythm sung by Your holy saints, Muktanand Swami and others. If You shower Your mercy upon us, we may be blessed with that sublime experience.”

With Shri Hari’s gracious consent, Sadguru Muktanand Swami, Devanand Swami, Sukhanand Swami, and other eminent saint-composers sang divine kirtans for a long time. Shastri Lakshmiram once again accompanied them by producing the rhythmic chime of bells from his mouth, delighting all who were present.
