Gujarati

Pragji Purani and the Grace of Shriji Maharaj
In Gadhpur, Shri Hari regularly arranged for sacred discourses (katha) to be read in the divine assembly. At that time, a Brahmin scholar named Purushottam Bhatt used to come to recite the katha. Purushottam Bhatt harbored intense pride in his learning and scholarship. In his mind, he believed that all the sadhus accompanying Shri Hari were simpletons and unlettered. With this haughty mindset, he would repeatedly declare in the assembly, “If you do not understand anything, feel free to ask me…!”
The holy sadhus, however, were far more absorbed in loving contemplation of the manifest divine form (pragat murti) of Shri Hari than in the narrator’s recitation, remaining blissful in that enchanting presence. Shri Hari would gently tell the Bhatt, “All these saints understand everything; you simply recite the scripture. Whenever they have a question, they will ask.” Yet the Brahmin’s ego over his scholarship continued to swell.
One day, to eradicate Purushottam Bhatt’s pride, Garvaganchan Shri Hari (the dispeller of arrogance) posed several intricate and profound scriptural questions in the assembly. In response, Bhatt fumbled, offering evasive arguments and superficial scriptural citations. Shri Hari systematically dismantled each of his arguments with flawless logic. Unable to answer, the proud scholar was rendered utterly speechless and dumbfounded.
Seeing this, the Kathi Darbars seated in the assembly seized the moment and teased him, “O Bhatthada! You were boasting all along saying ‘Ask me questions, ask me questions!’ Now your Father (the Supreme Lord Himself) has questioned you, go ahead and answer! For days on end you kept shouting to ask questions!”
Another Darbar quipped, “This Bhatt is hollow; what answer could he possibly give to Shri Hari? He could not even comprehend the supreme humility and discretion of the santos!”
Stung by these sharp retorts, Purushottam Bhatt rolled up his scripture bundle (pothi) in humiliation and rage, and abruptly departed.
Thus, Shri Hari dismantled his intellectual pride and protected the revered Nand santos from his disdain.
In that very assembly, the mother of Pragji Dave was seated. Shri Hari walked up to her and asked, “Ba, will your Pragji recite the katha?” The mother replied humbly, “O Prabhu! Pragji is still studying the basics of Sarasvat Sanskrit grammar. He has never formally studied the Puranas or Shrimad Bhagavatam. How could he possibly recite discourses before a divine Master like You and all these enlightened santos?”
Hearing her concern, Shri Hari assured her, “Ba, rest assured, he will be able to accomplish everything!” Someone called Pragji Dave, and he arrived, prostrating reverently at the lotus feet of Shri Hari before taking his seat.
Shri Hari said to Pragji Dave, “It is Our wish that from now on you recite the katha daily. By Our grace, all knowledge will manifest effortlessly within you, so remain completely free of worry in every respect.”
From that very day, Pragji Dave became celebrated throughout the Satsang as ‘Pragji Purani.’ Like the perennial, uninterrupted flow of the sacred Ganga, he began delivering profound discourses with fluent eloquence. Difficult Sanskrit verses, their precise pronunciation, and their deepest allegorical meanings unlocked spontaneously within him by the sheer grace of Shri Hari. Even seasoned scholars who had to laboriously study Sanskrit meters and poetic figures marveled at how Pragji Purani mastered them effortlessly at first sight without prior reading.
Mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim | Yat-kripa tam-aham vande paramananda-madhavam || (Meaning: “I bow to the supremely blissful Madhava, by whose grace the mute becomes eloquent and the lame ascends mountains!”)
In accordance with this sacred verse, as if the goddess of speech herself had blessed him, Pragji Purani recited continuous, mesmerizing katha. Shri Hari had Pragji Purani recite the entire Shrimad Bhagavatam seven times in succession. As described by Sadguru Premanand Swami in the Niyama-chesta verses, whenever a deeply esoteric spiritual truth arose during the discourse, Shri Hari Himself, seated upon His cot (dholiyo), would sway in divine ecstasy.
Frequently, when a chapter concluded and Shri Hari withheld His consent for the concluding prayer (purnahuti), Pragji Purani would seamlessly begin reciting the next chapter. Then Sura Khachar and other chieftains would playfully become restless and tease: “O Bhatthada! Look, you crossed the red line again! Conclude now, or else after the assembly we will make you march like a peacock!”
Hearing this playful banter, Shri Hari would break into joyful, resounding laughter.
