સદગુરુ બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામી વડતાલમાં લક્ષ્મીનારાયણ દેવનું ભવ્ય મંદિર બંધાવતા હતા. તે સમયે મંદિરના બાંધકામ માટે વપરાતા પત્થરો ખંભાત બંદરેથી આવતા હતા.

સદગુરુ બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામી વડતાલમાં શ્રી લક્ષ્મીનારાયણ દેવનું ભવ્ય શિખરબદ્ધ મંદિર બંધાવતા હતા. મંદિરના બાંધકામ માટે શ્રેષ્ઠ પત્થરો ખંભાત બંદરેથી ગાડાં ભરીને લાવવામાં આવતા હતા. પરંતુ ખંભાતના નવાબ તરફથી પત્થરો પર ભારે જકાત વેરો (દાણ) વસૂલ કરવામાં આવતો હોવાથી પત્થરો ખૂબ મોંઘા પડતા હતા.
એ જ વખતે મહુધાના અગ્રણી પાટીદાર અને પરમ નિષ્ઠાવાન હરિભક્ત અજુભાઈ વડતાલ દર્શને આવ્યા. શ્રીજીમહારાજે કહ્યું, “અજુભાઈ! તમે ખંભાત જાઓ અને નવાબને મળીને મંદિરના પત્થરો પરનો વેરો માફ કરાવી લાવો.” અજુભાઈએ વિનમ્રતાથી કહ્યું, “હે મહારાજ! મારી તો નવાબ કે દરબારમાં કોઈ ઓળખાણ નથી!” શ્રીહરિએ અભયદાન આપ્યું, “અજુભાઈ! તમે જાઓ, અમે તમારી ભેળા છીએ; કાર્ય થઈ જશે!”
અજુભાઈ ખંભાત પહોંચ્યા ત્યારે અકસ્માતે ઘોડી ભડકતાં તેઓ પડી ગયા અને તેમનો પગ ઊતરી ગયો. સ્થાનિક લોકો તેમને સ્વામિનારાયણની ધર્મશાળા (ઓરડી)માં લાવ્યા. ત્યાં તુલસીદાસ નામના એક પ્રખ્યાત હાડવૈદ્ય રહેતા હતા. અજુભાઈને જોતાં જ તુલસીદાસ ઓળખી ગયા, કારણ કે તેઓ પૂર્વે શ્રીજીમહારાજના દિક્ષિત સાધુ ચક્રધરાનંદ સ્વામી હતા! કઠિન નિયમો ન પળાતાં તેઓ મંડળ છોડી ખંભાતમાં તુલસીદાસ નામે હાડવૈદ્યનો ધંધો કરતા અને પ્રભુનું ભજન કરતા હતા. તુલસીદાસે અજુભાઈનો પગ બેસાડી સાજા કર્યા. અજુભાઈએ નવાબ પાસેથી પત્થરનો કર માફ કરાવવા આવ્યાની વાત કરી. તુલસીદાસે કહ્યું, “જો તમે મને શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં ફરી સ્થાન અપાવો, તો હું નવાબ પાસે જઈ તત્કાળ કર માફીનો પરવાનો અપાવું!” અજુભાઈએ વચન આપ્યું.
બીજે દિવસે તુલસીદાસ અજુભાઈને લઈને રાજદરબારમાં ગયા. નવાબ મુમુક્ષુ હોવાથી અજુભાઈના દર્શન અને વડતાલ મંદિરની વાત સાંભળી અત્યંત પ્રસન્ન થયો અને પત્થરોનો તમામ જકાત વેરો માફ કરતો સરકારી આદેશપત્ર લખી આપ્યો! અજુભાઈ અને તુલસીદાસ વડતાલ પહોંચ્યા. અજુભાઈએ નવાબનો માફીપત્ર શ્રીજીમહારાજના ચરણોમાં ધર્યો. શ્રીહરિ અતિ પ્રસન્ન થઈ અજુભાઈને બાથમાં ભરી ભેટ્યા. ત્યારે અજુભાઈએ હાથ જોડી કહ્યું, “મહારાજ! આ કાર્યમાં મને તુલસીદાસે સહાય કરી છે અને મેં તેમને આપના ચરણોમાં પુનઃ રખાવવાનું વચન આપ્યું છે.” મહારાજે પરીક્ષા કરતાં કહ્યું, “એ નિયમભ્રષ્ટ સાધુ આપણને ખપે નહીં!” આ સાંભળતાં જ વચનપાલક અજુભાઈએ શ્રીહરિને સાષ્ટાંગ દંડવત કર્યા અને બોલ્યા, “તો મહારાજ! આ અમારા છેલ્લા જય સ્વામિનારાયણ! જો મારું વચન ન પળાય તો મારે તુલસીદાસ સામે નીચાજોણું થાય!” અજુભાઈને ચાલતા થતા જોઈ શ્રીહરિ તરત ઊભા થઈ ગયા અને પ્રેમથી બોલ્યા, “અજુભાઈ! પાછા વળો! અમારા ભક્તનું વચન અમે ક્યારેય મિથ્યા થવા દઈએ નહીં!” શ્રીહરિએ તુલસીદાસને બોલાવી પશ્ચાત્તાપ જોઈ ક્ષમા આપી અને ફરી ‘ચક્રધરાનંદ સ્વામી’ તરીકે સાધુ મંડળમાં સ્થાન આપ્યું. તેમની પાસે રહેલા વીસ હજાર રૂપિયા મંદિર નિર્માણની સેવામાં સ્વીકાર્યા.

सद्गुरु ब्रह्मानंद स्वामी वडताल में श्री लक्ष्मीनारायण देव के भव्य शिखरबद्ध मंदिर का निर्माण करवा रहे थे। मंदिर निर्माण हेतु श्रेष्ठ पाषाण खंभात बंदरगाह से मँगवाए जा रहे थे। किंतु खंभात के नवाब द्वारा पत्थरों पर भारी चुंगी कर (जकात) लगाने के कारण व्यय अत्यधिक बढ़ रहा था।
उसी समय महुधा गाँव के प्रतिष्ठित पाटीदार और अनन्य भक्त अजुभाई वडताल दर्शन हेतु पधारे। श्रीजी महाराज ने आज्ञा दी, “अजुभाई! आप खंभात जाकर नवाब से मिलकर मंदिर के पत्थरों का समस्त कर माफ करवा लाइए।” अजुभाई ने संकोच से कहा, “महाराज! नवाब के दरबार में मेरा कोई परिचय नहीं है।” सर्वसमर्थ श्रीहरि बोले, “आप निर्भय होकर जाइए, हम आपके साथ हैं; कार्य सिद्ध होगा!”
खंभात की सीमा में प्रवेश करते ही अजुभाई की घोड़ी बिदक गई और वे गिर पड़े, जिससे उनका पैर उतर (विस्थापित) गया। राहगीर उन्हें स्वामीनारायण संप्रदाय की धर्मशाला में लाए। वहाँ तुलसीदास नामक एक कुशल हड्डी-वैद्य रहते थे। अजुभाई को देखते ही वे पहचान गए, क्योंकि वे पूर्व में श्रीजी महाराज के दीक्षित संत ‘चक्रधरानंद स्वामी’ थे! वैराग्य के अत्यंत कठोर नियम न निभ पाने के कारण वे मंडल छोड़कर खंभात में वैद्य का कार्य करते हुए भगवान का गुप्त भजन कर रहे थे। तुलसीदास ने अजुभाई का पैर बैठाकर उन्हें स्वस्थ किया। जब अजुभाई ने आने का प्रयोजन बताया, तो तुलसीदास भावुक होकर बोले, “यदि आप मुझे पुनः श्रीहरि के पावन चरणों में शरण दिला दें, तो मैं नवाब से तत्काल कर-माफी का राजकीय आदेश दिलवा दूँगा!” अजुभाई ने सत्य वचन दे दिया।
अगले दिन तुलसीदास अजुभाई को नवाब के सम्मुख ले गए। नवाब मुमुक्षु और न्यायप्रिय था। उसने अजुभाई का भव्य सत्कार किया और वडताल मंदिर के समस्त पत्थरों का चुंगी कर सदा के लिए शून्य करने का ताम्रपत्र जारी कर दिया! अजुभाई और तुलसीदास वडताल पहुँचे और नवाब का आदेश-पत्र श्रीहरि के करकमलों में समर्पित किया। श्रीजी महाराज अत्यंत हर्षित होकर अजुभाई से गले मिले। तब अजुभाई ने हाथ जोड़कर निवेदन किया, “प्रभु! यह कार्य तुलसीदास के सहयोग से हुआ है और मैंने उन्हें आपके चरणों में पुनः स्थान दिलाने का वचन दिया है।” महाराज ने परीक्षा लेते हुए कहा, “नियम छोड़कर जाने वाले साधु को हम पुनः स्वीकार नहीं करते!” यह सुनते ही अजुभाई ने दंडवत प्रणाम किया और कहा, “तो महाराज! हमारा अंतिम जय स्वामीनारायण स्वीकार कीजिए! यदि मैं दिया हुआ वचन न निभा सकूँ, तो मेरा जीना व्यर्थ है!” अजुभाई को जाते देख भक्तवत्सल श्रीहरि तुरंत दौड़े और बोले, “अजुभाई! रुकिए, हम अपने अनन्य भक्त का वचन कभी खंडित नहीं होने देंगे!” महाराज ने तुलसीदास का पश्चात्ताप देखकर उन्हें क्षमादान दिया, पुनः ‘चक्रधरानंद स्वामी’ नाम से साधु मंडल में सम्मिलित किया और उनके पास संचित बीस हजार रुपये मंदिर के पावन कार्य में स्वीकार किए।

Vadtal Temple Stone Tax Exemption and the Integrity of Ajubhai Patel
While Sadguru Brahmanand Swami was overseeing the grand stone construction of the magnificent Laxminarayan Dev temple in Vadtal, massive sandstone slabs were being shipped through the port of Khambhat. However, the ruling Nawab of Khambhat levied exorbitant transit customs duties on every cartload, creating immense financial strain.
Around that time, Ajubhai Patel, a respected elder and staunch devotee from Mahudha, arrived in Vadtal. Shriji Maharaj instructed him, “Ajubhai! Go to Khambhat, petition the Nawab, and have all transit taxes on the temple stones permanently waived.” Ajubhai submitted humbly, “Maharaj! I have no acquaintances in the Nawab’s royal court.” Shrihari assured him, “Go fearlessly, Ajubhai! We are right by your side; the mission will succeed!”
Upon reaching the outskirts of Khambhat, Ajubhai’s mare startled, tossing him to the ground and dislocating his hip. Helpful locals carried him to the local Swaminarayan guest house, summoning a well-known local bonesetter named Tulsidas Bawa. Examining Ajubhai, Tulsidas immediately recognized him, for he was none other than the former Paramhansa Chakradharanand Swami! Unable to endure the austere spiritual rigors of the sadhu order, he had quietly left the fold years earlier, practicing medicine in Khambhat while privately chanting the holy name. Tulsidas skillfully set Ajubhai’s leg. Hearing of Ajubhai’s mission to the Nawab, Tulsidas wept with remorse and offered a bargain: “If you secure my readmission at Shrihari’s lotus feet, I will ensure the Nawab issues an immediate decree waiving every coin of the transit tax!” Ajubhai gave him his solemn word.
The next morning, Tulsidas escorted Ajubhai to the royal palace. Impressed by Ajubhai’s dignity and the noble purpose of the Vadtal temple, the Nawab cheerfully signed an unconditional charter completely exempting all building stones from royal customs. Returning to Vadtal, Ajubhai presented the official tax-exemption charter to Shriji Maharaj. Overjoyed, Maharaj rose from His cot and embraced Ajubhai with boundless delight. Ajubhai then folded his hands: “O Lord! This triumph was made possible by Tulsidas, to whom I pledged that You would forgive him and restore him to the sadhu fold.” Testing His devotee, Maharaj remarked, “A monk who abandoned his monastic vows cannot be readmitted.” Without flinching, the principled farmer bowed low and replied steadfastly: “Then Maharaj, accept this as my final Jai Swaminarayan! If I cannot honor my pledged word, I have no face to show anyone!” Seeing Ajubhai prepare to depart forever, the Lord of compassion caught his arm and exclaimed, “Wait, Ajubhai! How could We ever allow Our true devotee’s word to go unfulfilled?” Maharaj called Tulsidas forward, forgave him in view of his sincere repentance, reordained him as Chakradharanand Swami, and graciously accepted his savings of twenty thousand silver rupees toward the Vadtal temple construction.
