Jivan Bhakt of Jetalpur and the Math Rotlo

Once, Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan was gracing the town of Jetalpur. On the auspicious day of Baras (the twelfth day of the lunar fortnight, following the Ekadashi fast), Shriji Maharaj announced that He would accept thaal (devotional food offerings) brought by all the devotees of Jetalpur. Hearing this, the entire fellowship was overjoyed and began preparing diverse varieties of traditional delicacies. Guided by the spirit of “devotion according to one’s capability,” women even borrowed ingredients from neighboring households to cook their finest offerings.

A visitor from outside arrived and noticed the tremendous hustle and bustle. “Brother, why is everyone in such a hurry? Is there some special event?” he inquired. Someone replied, “Tomorrow is the sacred day of Baras parana, and Bhagwan Swaminarayan will dine on the thaals offered by the entire village! Everyone is preparing for that. When will such a sublime opportunity ever arise again? The Supreme Lord Mahaprabhu Himself is currently residing in our Jetalpur!”

Amidst this joyous atmosphere, a wave of sadness fell over the face of Patel Jivanbhai. He thought to himself, “We too yearn to feed Maharaj, but what could we possibly offer Shri Hari…?” Jivan Patel returned home crestfallen. Observing his sorrowful countenance, his wife immediately understood and consoled him, “Please do not worry. Tomorrow, we too shall prepare a thaal and offer it to Shri Hari.” Patel replied, “Think about it, what do we have in our house? Our children are suffering from hunger. Where will we gather suitable ingredients for a royal offering?”

His devoted wife lovingly reassured him, “Do not worry at all. We have about a ser (~500 grams) of math (moth beans) left at home. I will grind it into flour right away. In the meantime, go to the fields and ravines to gather some wild dodi greens.” Jivan Patel hesitated, “Yes, but the wealthy merchants will arrive carrying lavish delicacies in plates of pure gold! What standing could our humble meal possibly have before them?”

His wife replied with unwavering faith, “Ah! Bhagwan hungers only for pure devotion and love! Setting aside the royal feast of Duryodhana, Shri Krishna lovingly savored the simple greens offered by Vidura. Lord Raghav, too, relished the humble tasted berries of the poor tribal devotee Shabari. The Lord is ever-hungry for the true love of His devotee. If we offer this rotlo with a pure and sincere heart, I have complete faith that He will accept our love.”

Chanting the Lord’s holy name, Jivan Bhakt went out into the wilderness and gathered fresh dodi leaves. Meditating upon the divine murti of Bhagwan, his wife ground the math beans, baked fresh rotlas, cooked the tender dodi ni bhaji, and placed fresh yogurt in a small brass bowl (tanheli), thus preparing their humble thaal.

Early the following morning, having completed His daily rituals, Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan sat under the ornamental canopy of the ancient terrace by the banks of Devsarovar lake to accept the offerings of the devotees. Surrounded by enlightened paramhansas and faithful devotees, the Lord radiated divine splendor. Devotees carried thaals laden with exquisite sweets in golden, silver, and brass vessels according to their means, their hearts overflowing with boundless joy as they walked toward the terrace.

The omniscient Lord Swaminarayan, recognizing the supreme pinnacle of Jivan Bhakt’s unalloyed love, noticed Jivanbhai standing quietly in the line and called him forward. Hesitant and shy amidst the grand gathering, Jivan Bhakt slowly stepped toward Shri Hari. Before thousands of onlookers, the compassionate Lord stood up, descended from His seat, approached Jivan Bhakt, and took the humble plate directly from his hands onto His own lap. Shriji Maharaj began relishing the coarse math rotlo and wild dodi greens with immense delight!

The Lord showered abundant praises upon the sweetness and sincere love suffused in every bite. The wealthy devotees stood utterly astonished. Lavish sweets such as jalebi, mesub, mohanthal, and ghebar remained untouched in the background. People whispered to one another, “Oh! We had no idea that Shri Hari cherished math rotlo so dearly; we labored in vain preparing all these elaborate sweets!”

As Shriji Maharaj continued to dine and only a quarter of the rotlo remained, Somla Khachar and Sura Khachar prayed, “O Maharaj! Will we be blessed with the prasadi of this divine thaal today?” Shri Hari smiled and replied, “Today, you shall not receive any prasad from this.” Thereupon, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami spoke in loving camaraderie (sakha bhav), “Maharaj! Only the one who eats knows the true flavor of the rotlo. If You simply praise it without sharing, how can we experience its greatness? To prove it, You must offer us a taste of this prasadi!” Soon, all the sadhus and devotees began pleading, “Prabhu, please bestow this prasad upon us as well!” Bhagwan Swaminarayan then lovingly distributed small morsels of the sacred rotlo to everyone.

Thus, in Jetalpur, the devotion of Jivan Bhakt, an humble devotee sheltered at the lotus feet of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, was forever inscribed in golden letters in the annals of Satsang history.

Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami has sung: “Sakhi uparne rang rache nahi, dambh dekhi re, Rahe dayalu dur ke, Bhudar bhukhyo chhe bhav no.” (Meaning: “O sakhi, the Lord is never swayed by superficial display; seeing deceit, the Compassionate One stays far away, for Bhagwan hungers only for true devotion.”)
