Atmaram Darji and the Dagali of Love-Stitches
Upon the loving invitation of King Vajesinh Bapu, Shri Hari graced Bhavnagar with His divine presence and stayed at the residence of the steadfast and heroic devotee, Rupabhai. At that time, Atmaram Darji, a tailor from Surat, arrived for Shriji Maharaj’s darshan. Shriji Maharaj inquired, “Why did you not come when We were in Vadtal, and why have you travelled all the way here?” Atmaram Darji replied humbly, “O Maharaj! At that time, I was completely absorbed in a special task, which prevented me from coming for Your darshan. As soon as that work was completed, I boarded a boat from Surat and came directly here. By Your divine grace, my trade is flourishing, and whatever skill I have learned is entirely through Your benevolence. Utilizing that craft, I have sewn and brought a dagali (ornate coat) for You.” Saying this, he carefully took out the meticulously kept, handcrafted dagali from his pouch.
Bhaktaraj Atmaram pleaded, “O Maharaj! Let me first perform Your pujan, and then I shall adorn You with this dagali.” He reverently performed Maharaj’s pujan. On the rich velvet fabric, golden motifs and intricate designs of the sun and moon had been delicately embroidered. Fine stitches had been sewn using golden thread. Shri Hari gazed in deep appreciation at this exquisite and artistic dagali crafted with pure devotion. Shri Hari asked with great affection, “How long did it take you to prepare this dagali? And what happened to your livelihood during that period?” Atmaram Darji replied, “O Maharaj! It took six whole months to craft this dagali; that was the sole reason I could not visit Vadtal for Your darshan! While stitching the dagali, an unbroken chanting of Your holy name resonated within me, filling every pore of my being with supreme peace and bliss. As for my livelihood, it was running smoothly purely by Your divine grace.”
Shri Hari showed the dagali to all the saints and devotees and said with profound affection, “In this dagali, Atmaram has poured his very soul, and with every stitch, he has sewn Us to his heart. He has crafted it with stitches of selfless love.” When Atmaram adorned Shri Hari with the dagali, Shriji Maharaj was immensely pleased. Taking it off, He handed it to Mayaram Bhatt and said, “Tomorrow, when We visit the royal court, We shall wear this dagali. And Atmaram, you too shall accompany Us to the court.”
The following day, as Shriji Maharaj prepared to proceed to the royal palace, Mayaram Bhatt adorned Him with the dagali, Rupabhai offered other fine garments, and expensive fragrant attar (perfume) was sprinkled over Him.
Shri Hari entered the royal court of Bhavnagar. Everyone who beheld His divine form was instantly captivated. Gazing upon Shri Hari adorned in that attractive dagali and radiant golden attire brought immense soothing coolness and joy to everyone’s eyes and hearts. To receive Shri Hari, King Vajesinh walked all the way to the palace gates, reverently seated Him upon the royal seat, and performed His pujan. Many matters were discussed, yet King Vajesinh’s mind remained completely entranced by the splendid dagali Shri Hari was wearing.
After Shri Hari returned to His lodging, King Vajesinh inquired from his attendant about the craftsman who had made the garment. Ravji Khavas informed him, “Bapu! It was lovingly crafted and offered by Atmaram Darji of Surat.” King Vajesinh immediately summoned Atmaram Darji and said, “I rule over eighteen hundred villages, yet I do not possess such a splendid dagali. Will you not make one like this for me?” Atmaram remained silent. Ravji Khavas then tempted him, saying, “You will be rewarded with whatever wealth you ask for.” Atmaram Darji replied with unwavering devotion, “Bapu! No matter what I do, I could never again create a dagali like the one I made for Swaminarayan Mahaprabhu! In that dagali, I wove stitches of pure love. Where could such divine love come from for you? Shriji Maharaj holds my eternal salvation in the palm of His hand; what more could you possibly offer me beyond that?!” Saying this, Atmaram begged pardon and departed from the court.
To King Vajesinh, these words of Atmaram Darji felt sharper and more intolerable than the blow of a sword. Astounded, he exclaimed, “I simply cannot comprehend what this Swaminarayan has done to all these people!”
