વડોદરામાં નાથભકત અને સાંઇઠ કેદીઓનો ઉદ્ધાર
સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી વડોદરા બીરાજતા હતા. એકદિવસ સ્વામી સભામા હરિભક્તોને શ્રીહરિના ચરિત્રો કહેતા હતા એ વખતે નાથભકત આવ્યા ને બોલ્યા કે સ્વામી, કાયસ્થ હરિભક્ત મીસ્ત્રીલાલ બહુ માંદા છે તો આપ દર્શન આપવા પધારો એવી એમની ઇચ્છા છે. સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી નાથભકત સાથે મીસ્ત્રીલાલ ને દર્શન દેવા એમના ઘરે પધાર્યા ને કહ્યું કે બે દિવસ મા શ્રીહરિ તમને ધામમાં તેડી જાશે. શ્રીહરિનુ ભજન કરજો એમ કહી સ્વામી સંતો સાથે પાછા આવવા નીસર્યા એ વખતે સંતો રસ્તે ચાલતા કિર્તનો ગાતા હતા. આ સાંભળીને ચબુતરા જેલના કેદીઓએ પોતાની કોટડીની ખુલ્લી બારીની જાળી એ કિર્તનો સાંભળ્યા એટલે ત્યાં થી ઉચા અવાજે સ્વામી ને નમો નારાયણ કહ્યા ને અરજ કરી કે, સ્વામી તમે અમને જેલમાંથી છોડાવવા કૃપા કરો ને? સ્વામી રસ્તે ઉભા રહ્યા ને બોલ્યા કે આ નાથભકત કાલ તમારા સાથે કેદી થશે ને તમને જેલમાંથી છોડાવશે ને લખચોરાશી માથી પણ છોડાવશે. તમે બધા ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણ નુ ભજન કરજ્યો. આમ કહી સ્વામી પોતાને ઉતારે પધાર્યા.
બરાબર એજ દિવસે સરકારે બધા સરકારી મહાલો ને વહીવટદારો ને હૂકમ કર્યો કે સ્વામિનારાયણ ના મૂંડીયાવ ને શહેર મા રહેવા ફરવા દેશો નહી ને કાઢી મુકજો ને ન જાય તો એમને કેદ કરજયો. સરકારે પાંઢરા બાળૂભાં નામના અમલદાર ને હૂકમથી કહ્યું કે શહેરમાંથી બધાય બાવાને કાઢી મૂકો.
બીજેદિવસે સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી નાથભકતના ફળીયા પાસે ચોકમાં સભા કરીને વાતો કરતા હતા ત્યાં બાળૂભાં ઘોડે ચડીને આવ્યો ને બોલ્યો તે તમે બધાય બાવાઓ શહેર છોડીને જાતા રહેજો નહીતર કેદ કરીશુ. ત્યારે સ્વામી કહે કે આ નાથભકત અમને વારે વારે તેડી લાવે છે, એટલે અમે આવીએ છીએ માટે એને પેલા કેદ કરો. આ સાંભળી ને બાળૂભાંએ નાથભકત ને ચબૂતરાની જેલ મા કેદ કર્યા.
એ સમયે કલાલી ગામના હરિભક્તો ગાડી લઇને સ્વામી ને તેડવા આવ્યા એટલે સ્વામી વડોદરે થી કલાલી એ પધાર્યા.
નાથભકત તો જેલના એ સાંઇઠ કેદીઓને ભગવાનના મહીમાની વાતો કરવા માંડ્યા એટલે એ કેદીઓની બુદ્ધિ પવિત્ર થઇ. બધાયે સરકાર તરફથી ખાવાનું મળતુ એનો ત્યાગ કરીને ઉપવાસ કરવા શરુ કર્યા. ત્રીજે દિવસે સર્વના ઉપવાસથી શ્રીહરિ અકળાયા ને જેલમાં મુળજી બ્રહ્મચારી સાથે દર્શન દીધા ને પ્રસાદ જમવા આપ્યો, ત્યારે નાથભકત કહે કે હે મહારાજ..! ત્રણ દિવસ થી નાહ્યા નથી ને પૂજા પણ બાકી છે.
ત્યાતો શ્રીહરિના ડાબા પગની તચલી આંગળીએથી ગંગાજળની ધારા વહેતા સૌએ સ્નાન કર્યું. શ્રીહરિએ ખોબો ભરીને સૌ ઉપર જળ વર્ષા કરતા સૌના પાતક નાશ પામ્યા. નાથભકત બોલ્યા કે હે હરિ..! નિત્યપુજા બાકી છે એટલે જમાશે નહી. ત્યારે શ્રીહરિ કહે કે અમારી પૂજા કરી એમા તમારે બધીય પૂજા આવી ગઇ. છતાં નાથભક્ત અડગ રહ્યાં. તે શ્રી હરિએ બ્રહ્મચારી ને પૂજા લેવા મોકલ્યાં. તે પૂજા કરી. મહારાજ કહે તમારા જેવી દ્રઢ ભકિત કોઇને નથી એમ કહી ને રાજી થયા.
શ્રીહરિ નાથભકત ને ભેટ્યા ને કપાળે ચંદનની અર્ચા કરી, નાથભક્તને પ્રસાદ જમાડ્યો. બધાય સાંઇઠ કેદીઓને પણ જમાડ્યા ને ફુલોના હાર પેરાવ્યા ને ચરણારવિંદ આપીને અંતર્ધાન થઇ ગયા. નાથભકતને સર્વે કેદીઓ તો જેલ મા ઉચ્ચસ્વરે ધૂન્ય કરવા લાગ્યા એ સાંભળીને ચોકી પહેરાવાળો ત્યાં ગયો ને એણે વાત દિવાનજી ને કરી. દિવાને તપાસ કરાવવા બાળૂભાંને નાથભકત ના ઘરે મોકલ્યો તો ત્યાં સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી સભા કરીને કથા કરતા દીઠા ને સભા મા નાથભકત ને સાંઇઠ કેદીઓ પણ બેઠેલા દીઠા, બાળૂભાં ઘોડા દોડાવીને જેલમાં તપાસ કરવા ગયો ત્યાં પણ સાંઇઠ કેદીઓ સાથે નાથભકત ને ધૂન કરતા દીઠા. બાળૂભાં તો અતિ આશ્ચર્ય પામ્યો એટલે એ તુરંત જ સરકાર ની કચેરી ગયો ત્યાં પોતે નજરે દીઠેલ વાત કરી, એટલે સરકારે કહ્યું કે ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી ને તો કલાલી ગામના પાટીદાર ગાડી લઇને તેડવા આવેલા એટલે એ ત્યાં ગયા હતા, બાળૂભાં તમે કલાલી ગામે તપાસ કરો..! બાળૂભાં તરત જ મારતે ઘોડે કલાલી ગામે ગયા તો ત્યાં પણ સ્વામી સંતમંડળ ને નાથભકત ને કેદીઓ સહિત સભા મા કથા કરતા હતા એવું જોયું. બાળૂભાં ને આવ્યા દેખીને નાથભકતે પોતાના ગળામાં શ્રીહરિએ પહેરાવેલ હાર હતો એ અભણ બ્રાહ્મણ ને પહેરાવ્યો તો એ યજુર્વેદ ની ઋચા ઓ બોલવા મંડ્યો. બાળૂંભા ને મહાઅચરજ થયું. પોતે માફી માંગી ને સ્વામી ને પગે પડ્યો. નાથભકત બોલ્યા કે શ્રીહરિના દ્રઢ આશ્રયના પ્રતાપે ભગવાનના સંતો-ભક્તો પણ આ બધુ કરવાને સમર્થ છે.
બાળૂભાં એ સરકારમાં કહેવડાવીને સાંઇઠ કેદીઓને મુક્ત કરાવ્યા ને અઢીસો રુપિયા રોકડા આપીને બધાને પાઘડી બંધાવી.
આમ સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ ઐશ્વર્ય બતાવીને બાળૂંભા ને નિશ્ચય કરાવ્યો ને સાંઇઠ કેદીઓને જેલમાંથી છોડાવીને શ્રીહરિના ચરણે લીધા.

वडोदरा में नाथभक्त और साठ कैदियों का उद्धार
सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी वडोदरा में विराजमान थे। एक दिन स्वामी सभा में उपस्थित हरिभक्तों को श्रीहरि के दिव्य चरित्रों का श्रवण करा रहे थे। उसी समय अनन्य हरिभक्त नाथभक्त वहाँ आए और प्रार्थना करते हुए बोले, “हे स्वामी! कायस्थ हरिभक्त मिस्त्रीलाल अत्यंत अस्वस्थ हैं और उनकी हार्दिक इच्छा है कि आप पधारकर उन्हें दर्शन दें।” सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी नाथभक्त के साथ मिस्त्रीलाल के घर पधारे, उन्हें दर्शन दिए और कहा, “दो दिनों में श्रीहरि आपको अपने परमधाम (अक्षरधाम) ले जाएँगे; अतः आप निरंतर श्रीहरि का भजन कीजिए।” ऐसा कहकर स्वामी संतों के संग वापस लौटने लगे। मार्ग में चलते हुए संत मधुर स्वर में कीर्तन गा रहे थे। संतों के कीर्तन की ध्वनि चबूतरा जेल की कोठरी की खुली खिड़की की जाली से वहाँ बंद कैदियों ने सुनी। कैदियों ने वहाँ से ऊँचे स्वर में स्वामी को “नमो नारायण” कहा और करुण स्वर में प्रार्थना की, “हे स्वामी! आप कृपा करके हमें इस कारागार से छुड़ाने की दया कीजिए!” स्वामी मार्ग में रुक गए और बोले, “यह नाथभक्त कल स्वयं आपके साथ कैदी बनकर आएगा; वह आपको इस जेल से भी मुक्त कराएगा और चौरासी लाख योनियों के आवागमन से भी छुड़ाएगा। आप सभी भगवान स्वामीनारायण का भजन करना।” ऐसा कहकर स्वामी अपने उतारे (आवास) पर पधार गए।
उसी दिन सरकार ने सभी प्रशासनिक अधिकारियों और प्रशासकों को कड़ा आदेश जारी किया कि स्वामीनारायण के मूँडियों (साधुओं) को नगर में रहने या घूमने न दिया जाए, उन्हें नगर से निष्कासित कर दिया जाए, और यदि वे न जाएँ तो उन्हें बंदी बना लिया जाए। सरकार ने पांड्रा बाळूभा नामक एक अधिकारी को विशेष रूप से आदेश दिया कि नगर से सभी साधुओं को निकाल बाहर करो।
अगले दिन सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी नाथभक्त के घर के आँगन के पास स्थित चौक में सभा करके सत्संग चर्चा कर रहे थे। तभी बाळूभा घोड़े पर सवार होकर वहाँ आ धमका और कठोर स्वर में बोला, “तुम सब बावा (साधु) नगर छोड़कर तुरंत चले जाओ, अन्यथा हम तुम्हें बंदी बना लेंगे।” तब स्वामी ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, “यह नाथभक्त ही हमें बार-बार बुला लाता है, इसीलिए हम यहाँ आते हैं; अतः पहले इसी को बंदी बनाओ।” यह सुनते ही बाळूभा ने नाथभक्त को पकड़कर चबूतरा जेल में बंद कर दिया।
उसी समय कलाली गाँव के हरिभक्त बैलगाड़ी लेकर स्वामी को आमंत्रित करने आ पहुँचे, अतः गोपालानंद स्वामी वडोदरा से कलाली पधार गए।
उधर कारागार में नाथभक्त ने उन साठ कैदियों को भगवान के असीम महिमा की बातें सुनाना प्रारंभ किया। नाथभक्त के सत्संग से सभी कैदियों की बुद्धि निर्मल और पवित्र हो गई। सभी ने सरकार से मिलने वाले अन्न का त्याग कर दिया और भगवान के नाम पर उपवास करना प्रारंभ कर दिया। तीसरे दिन सभी कैदियों के अखंड उपवास और तड़प को देखकर भक्तवत्सल श्रीहरि व्याकुल हो उठे। वे स्वयं मुळजी ब्रह्मचारी के साथ कारागार में साक्षात प्रकट हो गए, सबको दिव्य दर्शन दिए और प्रसाद आरोगने के लिए दिया। तब नाथभक्त ने करबद्ध होकर कहा, “हे महाराज! हम तीन दिनों से नहाए नहीं हैं और हमारी नित्य-पूजा भी बाकी है।”
उसी क्षण श्रीहरि के बाएँ चरण की कनिष्ठिका (छोटी उँगली) से पावन गंगाजल की अविरल धारा बहने लगी और सभी ने उसमें स्नान किया। तत्पश्चात श्रीहरि ने अपनी अंजलि भरकर सभी के ऊपर चरणामृत की वर्षा की, जिससे सभी कैदियों के पाप-ताप तत्क्षण नष्ट हो गए। नाथभक्त पुनः बोले, “हे हरि! हमारी नित्य-पूजा शेष है, अतः पूजा किए बिना हम प्रसाद ग्रहण नहीं कर सकते।” तब श्रीहरि ने प्रेम से कहा, “आपने हमारी प्रत्यक्ष पूजा कर ली, उसमें आपकी समस्त पूजाएँ समाहित हो गईं!” फिर भी नाथभक्त अपने नित्य-नियम में अडिग रहे। यह देखकर श्रीहरि ने ब्रह्मचारी को पूजा की सामग्री लाने भेजा और नाथभक्त ने विधिपूर्वक पूजा संपन्न की। महाराज अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर बोले, “आपके जैसी दृढ़ और निष्काम भक्ति किसी की नहीं है!”
श्रीहरि ने नाथभक्त का आलिंगन किया, उनके भाल पर चंदन का तिलक किया और उन्हें थाल का महाप्रसाद जिमाया। इसके बाद श्रीजी महाराज ने सभी साठ कैदियों को भी प्रेमपूर्वक प्रसाद खिलाया, उन्हें पुष्पों के हार पहनाए, अपने चरणारविंद दिए और अंतर्धान हो गए।
इसके उपरांत नाथभक्त और सभी कैदी जेल के भीतर उच्च स्वर में स्वामीनारायण महामंत्र की धुन गाने लगे। यह सुनकर पहरेदार चकित रह गया और उसने तुरंत जाकर यह बात दीवानजी को बताई। दीवान ने सच्चाई जानने के लिए बाळूभा को नाथभक्त के घर भेजा। जब बाळूभा नाथभक्त के घर पहुँचा, तो उसने देखा कि सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी सभा में कथा कर रहे हैं और सभा में नाथभक्त तथा वे साठ कैदी भी शांत भाव से बैठे हुए हैं! यह देखकर बाळूभा भौंचक्का रह गया। वह घोड़ा दौड़ाते हुए जेल की जाँच करने गया, तो वहाँ भी नाथभक्त और साठ कैदी भक्तिभाव से धुन गाते दिखाई दिए!
अत्यंत विस्मित होकर बाळूभा तुरंत सरकारी कचहरी पहुँचा और अधिकारियों को अपनी आँखों देखी बात बताई। अधिकारियों ने कहा, “गोपालानंद स्वामी को तो कलाली गाँव के पाटीदार लेने आए थे, वे तो वहाँ गए हैं; बाळूभा, तुम कलाली गाँव जाकर जाँच करो!” बाळूभा तुरंत तीव्र गति से घोड़ा दौड़ाकर कलाली गाँव पहुँचा। वहाँ उसने देखा कि स्वामी अपने संत-मंडल के साथ सभा में कथा कर रहे हैं और उनके साथ नाथभक्त तथा वे सभी कैदी भी सभा में उपस्थित हैं!
बाळूभा को वहाँ आया देखकर नाथभक्त ने अपने गले से वह पुष्प-हार उतारा जो श्रीहरि ने उन्हें पहनाया था, और उसे सभा में बैठे एक अनपढ़ ब्राह्मण के गले में पहना दिया। हार पहनते ही वह निरक्षर ब्राह्मण अद्भुत रीति से यजुर्वेद की ऋचाओं का शुद्ध उच्चारण करने लगा! यह अलौकिक चमत्कार देखकर बाळूभा को असीम आश्चर्य हुआ। उसका सारा अभिमान चूर-चूर हो गया। उसने क्षमा याचना की और सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी के चरणों में गिर पड़ा। तब नाथभक्त ने कहा, “श्रीहरि के अनन्य और दृढ़ आश्रय के प्रताप से भगवान के संत और भक्त भी यह सब करने में पूर्ण समर्थ हैं।”
बाळूभा ने तुरंत सरकार से निवेदन करके उन साठों कैदियों को जेल से मुक्त करवाया, और अपनी ओर से ढाई सौ रुपये नकद देकर सभी के सिर पर पाग (पगड़ी) बँधवाई।
इस प्रकार सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी ने अपना दिव्य ऐश्वर्य प्रकट करके बाळूभा का संशय मिटाकर दृढ़ निश्चय कराया, और साठ कैदियों को कारागार एवं भवबंधन दोनों से मुक्त कराकर श्रीहरि के पावन चरणों में स्थान दिलाया।

Nathbhakt and the Deliverance of Sixty Prisoners in Vadodara
Sadguru Gopalanand Swami was residing in the city of Vadodara. One day, while Swami was narrating the divine lilas of Shri Hari to the gathered assembly of devotees, the devout devotee Nathbhakt arrived and prayed, “O Swami! The Kayastha devotee Mistrilal is gravely ill and ardently longs for your divine darshan.” Accompanying Nathbhakt, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami visited Mistrilal’s home, granted him darshan, and comforted him, saying, “In two days, Shri Hari will personally take you to His divine abode, Akshardham; therefore, continuously engage in devotion to Shri Hari.” With these words, Swami set out to return with the saints. As they walked along the street, the saints melodiously sang sacred kirtans. Hearing these holy songs through the barred window of their cell, the prisoners in the Chabutara jail called out from within, offering their obeisance with “Namo Narayan” and imploring in anguish, “O Swami! Please shower your mercy upon us and deliver us from this prison!” Swami paused on the road and prophetically answered, “Tomorrow, this Nathbhakt will become a prisoner alongside you; he shall free you not only from this prison, but also liberate you from the endless cycle of 8.4 million births and deaths. All of you, chant the holy name of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.” Saying this, Swami returned to his residence.
That very day, the government issued a strict decree to all administrative divisions and revenue officers ordering that the tonsured ascetics (sadhus) of Swaminarayan must not be permitted to stay or wander within the city, but must be driven out, and imprisoned if they refused to leave. The authorities dispatched an officer named Pandhra Balubha with explicit orders to expel all ascetics from the city.
The next day, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami was holding a spiritual assembly in the open square near Nathbhakt’s courtyard, delivering discourses. Balubha arrived on horseback and commanded harshly, “All you ascetics must leave the city immediately, otherwise we shall arrest you!” Swami calmly replied, “This Nathbhakt repeatedly invites and brings us here, which is why we come; therefore, arrest him first.” Hearing this, Balubha arrested Nathbhakt and cast him into the Chabutara prison.
At that time, devotees from the village of Kalali arrived with a carriage to invite Swami, and Gopalanand Swami departed from Vadodara for Kalali.
Meanwhile, inside the prison, Nathbhakt began discoursing on the supreme greatness and divine glory of Bhagwan to the sixty prisoners. Inspired by his words, the hearts and minds of all the prisoners were purified. They renounced the government rations and began observing devout fasts. On the third day, deeply moved by the sincere penance and unyielding devotion of all the prisoners, Shri Hari could not hold Himself back. Accompanied by Mulji Brahmachari, He manifested in person inside the prison cell, granted divine darshan, and offered sanctified prasad. Nathbhakt prayed with folded hands, “O Maharaj! We have not bathed for three days, and our daily worship (puja) remains unperformed.”
At that very moment, a sacred stream of holy Ganga water began flowing from the little toe of Shri Hari’s left lotus foot, and everyone bathed in the purifying flow. Shri Hari then took handfuls of the sanctified water and sprinkled it over them, washing away all their past sins and karmas. Nathbhakt then said, “O Hari! Our nitya-puja is yet to be completed, so we cannot partake of the prasad before worshipping You.” Shri Hari lovingly remarked, “By worshipping Us directly, all your worship is already fulfilled!” Yet Nathbhakt remained steadfast in upholding his sacred vows. Delighted by his unwavering discipline, Shri Hari sent Brahmachari to fetch the puja materials, and Nathbhakt completed his rituals. Maharaj joyfully proclaimed, “None possesses such firm and unshakeable devotion as yours!”
Shri Hari embraced Nathbhakt, adorned his forehead with fragrant sandalwood paste, and lovingly fed him the sanctified prasad from the thal. Shriji Maharaj then fed all sixty prisoners, garlanded them with fresh flowers, granted them His holy lotus feet (charanarvind), and vanished.
Following this divine encounter, Nathbhakt and all the prisoners began chanting the Swaminarayan mahamantra and dhun with soaring devotion inside the prison. Hearing the ecstatic singing, the guard was astonished and immediately reported the matter to the Diwan (chief minister). The Diwan ordered Balubha to Nathbhakt’s residence to investigate. Arriving there, Balubha was stunned to see Sadguru Gopalanand Swami delivering a discourse, with Nathbhakt and the sixty prisoners seated peacefully in the congregation! Utterly bewildered, Balubha galloped on horseback to the prison to inspect—only to find Nathbhakt and all sixty prisoners chanting the divine name with fervor inside the cell as well!
Overwhelmed with disbelief, Balubha rushed to the government court and narrated what he had witnessed with his own eyes. The officials told him, “The Patidar devotees from Kalali village came with a carriage to fetch Gopalanand Swami, and he had departed for Kalali. Balubha, go and investigate in Kalali village!” Balubha immediately rode at full speed to Kalali. Upon arrival, he beheld Swami discoursing with his assembly of saints, with Nathbhakt and the sixty prisoners seated right before him!
Seeing Balubha arrive, Nathbhakt took the sacred flower garland that Shri Hari had placed around his own neck and placed it upon an illiterate Brahmin present in the assembly. To everyone’s astonishment, that unlettered Brahmin instantly began chanting the sacred Vedic verses (richas) of the Yajurveda with flawless precision! Struck with awe and reverence, Balubha’s pride shattered. He bowed at the feet of Sadguru Gopalanand Swami and pleaded for forgiveness. Nathbhakt said, “By virtue of staunch refuge in Shri Hari, the holy saints and devotees of Bhagwan possess the divine power to accomplish all of this.”
Balubha immediately appealed to the authorities and secured the honorable release of all sixty prisoners. He personally gifted 250 rupees in cash to each of them and adorned their heads with ceremonial turbans.
In this manner, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami revealed his divine spiritual majesty, instilled unwavering conviction in Balubha, freed the sixty prisoners from incarceration and worldly bondage, and placed them eternally at the lotus feet of Shri Hari.
