Ajubhai and the Feast of Sixteen Bundles of Kantola Curry
In Gadhpur, when an impoverished Koli widow named Ladu Maa picked wild spiny gourds (kantola), Shri Hari Himself asked for them and lovingly partook of the meal prepared by Jivuba. Witnessing this, a devout devotee named Ajubhai felt a noble desire in his heart: “How wonderful it would be if Maharaj and the holy saints were to enjoy kantola picked by me in the same way!” With this thought, he took Bhagwandas along (who later renounced the world to become Bhagwandas Swami and resided at the orchard in Maliya Hatina) and walked to the banks of the Sabarmati River. There, they saw about fourteen Ekadmal sadhus (a group of ascetic, unrefined renunciants) playing in the clear waters. After exchanging greetings with “Jai Narayan,” Ajubhai shared his heartfelt aspiration with the Ekadmal sadhus.
The Ekadmal sadhus replied, “We will certainly help you fulfill your wish, but will Maharaj accept it from us?” Ajubhai was overjoyed and affirmed, “O holy saints! Maharaj is the redeemer of the fallen (Adham-oddharan)! If He could lovingly eat the berries tasted by Shabari and the kantola offered by elderly widow Ladu Doshi, He will surely accept our offering as well!”
Inspired by Ajubhai’s boundless faith, the Ekadmal sadhus rejoiced. Washing their saffron garments, all sixteen of them gathered wild kantola from the forest and packed them into sixteen large cloth bundles (gansadi), carrying them all the way to Gadhpur.
At that time, Shriji Maharaj was presiding over a spiritual discourse in the west-facing room at the home of Ghela Dhadhal. Arriving there, the sixteen devotees placed the bundles down at a modest distance and stood reverently, gazing upon Maharaj. Ajubhai approached Shriji Maharaj and humbly offered the bundles of kantola with folded hands. Maharaj was delighted and asked, “Where did these saffron bundles come from?” Ajubhai and Bhagwandas narrated the entire sequence of events. Hearing this, Maharaj compassionately remarked, “The ones who truly toiled are these poor Ekadmal sadhus. Call them near so We may embrace them!”
All fourteen Ekadmal sadhus approached and bowed at Shriji Maharaj’s lotus feet one by one. Maharaj placed His hands on their heads, embraced them warmly, and addressed the assembly: “Behold! We often overlook or discard these Ekadmal sadhus, yet they never abandon Satsang and continue to worship Us despite enduring hardships. Blessed indeed are they!” Shri Hari then instructed the sadhus, “From now on, dine in the sadhus’ courtyard and reside right here.”
Then devotee Ajubhai prayed, “O Maharaj! These Ekadmal sadhus dug a well, and to celebrate its completion, I wish to host a feast. Please have these kantola cooked into curry so that You and all the saints may dine!” Shri Hari smiled and said, “To prepare a curry from sixteen large bundles of kantola, twenty maunds (approx. 400 kg) of pure ghee will be required!” Without a moment’s hesitation, Ajubhai replied, “O Maharaj! My total savings amount to one hundred and seventeen rupees; please utilize it however You deem best!”
Shriji Maharaj Himself took charge and personally cooked the entire quantity of kantola in twenty maunds of ghee and had millet rotlas (bajra rotla) prepared.
When it was time for the offering (thal), Ajubhai seated Shri Hari near the stone platform of the well. Drawing water with his own hands, he gently massaged Maharaj’s divine body and bathed Him with immense devotion. He adorned Maharaj in fine garments—a delicate scarf (khes), a lightweight tunic (angarkhu), a finely tied turban (pagh), and a dhoti with dark borders—and applied fragrant sandalwood paste to His forehead. Spreading a blanket on an elevated platform beneath the cool shade of a neem tree beside the well, he seated Shri Hari for the meal. At that divine moment, Ajubhai entered a state of divine trance (samadhi). In samadhi, he beheld Varun Dev (the deity of waters) personally offering worship to Shri Hari and merging into His divine lotus feet. Shriji Maharaj relished the kantola curry along with the bajra rotlas and was immensely pleased.
Shriji Maharaj then bestowed the sanctified prasad from the thal upon Ajubhai, Bhagwandas, and his nephew Manordas (who later became an initiated sadhu named Harikrishnadas Swami), and imprinted His holy lotus feet upon their chests. Shriji Maharaj also seated all the Ekadmal sadhus alongside the other saints in the dining row and lovingly served them the sanctified feast Himself.
In due course, this loving devotee Ajubhai renounced worldly life and was initiated as a sadhu by Shri Hari, who gave him the name Prabhucharandas Swami.
