Dada Khachar of Kariyana and Ramji Patel of Pithvadi

In the village of Kariyana, there lived a devout devotee named Darbar Dada Khachar. He owned vast farmlands. Every morning and evening, he would visit the temple for darshan of Thakorji before attending to his agricultural work. He had taken a strict vow to chant five hundred rosaries (malas) of austerities (tap ni mala) every day. After completing his daily quota of rosaries, he performed the sixteen-step ritual worship (shodashopachar puja) of Thakorji’s metal murti in the temple, and only then engaged in his routine affairs. He was exceptionally humble and egoless; whenever he met a devotee of God, he would bow low and offer humble prostrations. Once, an ascetic named Kanhiram Bava from the neighboring village of Khas arrived in Kariyana after completing a pilgrimage to the four holy shrines (Char Dham). Kanhiram offered holy Ganga water to people and tied kanthis made of dhrunth (a sacred grass) around their necks. With the intention of tying a kanthi around Dada Khachar’s neck, the ascetic came to his home. At that time, Darbar Dada Khachar was performing his morning worship of Thakorji. After completing his personal puja, Dada Khachar performed his prescribed 108 prostrations (dandvats), while Kanhiram waited patiently. When the Darbar finished his daily devotional routine, the ascetic stepped forward to put the grass kanthi around his neck.

Darbar Dada Khachar resolutely declared, “This head will never bow before anyone ordinary! Around my neck is the kanthi of manifest Purushottam Narayan Himself, and I am the exclusive worshiper of that manifest Supreme Lord. Even if my neck were severed, no other kanthi can ever take its place. If you insist on tying your kanthi, tie it around my knee; even then, your spiritual liberation will be assured! Tying it around my knee will guarantee your supreme salvation—there is not the slightest doubt about it.”

Beholding the Darbar’s unshakable and steadfast conviction, Kanhiram Bava quietly left the village of Kariyana.

Meanwhile, in the village of Pithvadi, Ramji Patel had become a devoted satsangi through the holy visits of sadhus. He strictly observed the five fundamental moral vows (panch vartaman). Once, the regional district officer arrived at the village assembly square (choro). Ramji Patel and his young son went to the square. Seeing the sacred tilak-chandlo adorned on the foreheads of both the father and the son, the officer was deeply impressed and remarked, “Just by applying this tilak-chandlo, your physical body has attained supreme liberation!” Ramji Patel’s little son innocently chimed in, “Eating food nourishes the body, but applying the tilak-chandlo redeems the soul (jiva).” A brief conversation followed. The young boy naturally asked the district officer, “What is the true nature of the soul (jiva)?” The officer casually replied, “The soul is small, like a grasshopper!” Upon hearing this, the boy immediately replied, “Sir! The soul is ageless (ajar) and immortal (amar); it cannot be burned by fire, it cannot be scorched, it cannot be pierced or cut by weapons, and it carries the impressions of karmas accumulated over countless lifetimes!” Hearing this profound wisdom, the district officer was astonished and delighted. He said, “Ramji Patel! Your young boy possesses extraordinary intelligence and wisdom!” Ramji Patel humbly replied, “It is through the divine association and guidance of the holy Satpurush that he has attained such spiritual wisdom.”
