કારિયાણીના નથુ પટેલ અને વૃંદાવનના લક્ષ્મીચંદ શેઠનો પૂર્વજન્મ
શ્રીહરિ કારિયાણીમાં બિરાજમાન હતા. સભામાં એક આઠ-દસ વર્ષના નાના છોકરા સામે આંગળી ચીંધીને શ્રીજીમહારાજે રામાનુજાનંદ સ્વામી અને નાના ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને પૂછ્યું, “સ્વામી! આમને ઓળખો છો?” રામાનુજાનંદ સ્વામી બોલ્યા, “હે મહારાજ! એ તો કારિયાણીના પટેલનો દીકરો નથુ છે.” શ્રીજીમહારાજ હસીને બોલ્યા, “આ લૌકિક ઓળખાણ નહીં, એના પૂર્વજન્મની ઓળખાણ કરો! આમને તમે આગલા જન્મમાં વૃંદાવનમાં મળ્યા હતા. એ લક્ષ્મીચંદ શેઠ આ જન્મે નથુ પટેલ થયા છે, જેમણે તમારી બંનેની ખૂબ સેવા કરેલી. એ પુણ્યપ્રતાપે તેઓ સત્સંગમાં જન્મ્યા અને અમારો સાક્ષાત્ જોગ થયો છે!”
વૃંદાવનમાં લક્ષ્મીચંદ શેઠ નામે અત્યંત ધનાઢ્ય અને દાનવીર વૈષ્ણવ શ્રેષ્ઠી હતા. તેમણે શ્રીરંગજી ભગવાનનું ભવ્ય મંદિર બંધાવ્યું હતું અને મંદિરના ચોકનો સ્તંભ બાવીસ મણ શુદ્ધ સોનાથી મઢાવ્યો હતો! તેઓ નિત્ય પોતાના હાથે સાધુ-સંતોને સદાવ્રતમાં અન્નદાન આપતા. એક વખત સુખાનંદ સ્વામી સત્સંગ વિચરણ કરતા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા. ભિક્ષુકોમાં સ્ત્રીઓ હોવાથી ત્યાગી સુખાનંદ સ્વામી ઘણા દૂર ઊભા રહ્યા. સ્ત્રીઓ જતી રહી પછી જ તેમણે ભિક્ષા લીધી. આ જોઈ લક્ષ્મીચંદ શેઠે આશ્ચર્યથી પૂછ્યું, “મહાત્મા! આપ આટલા દૂર કેમ ઊભા હતા?” સુખાનંદ સ્વામીએ કહ્યું, “અમે પ્રગટ ભગવાન શ્રી સ્વામિનારાયણના પરમહંસ છીએ. અમે સ્ત્રી-ધનના પૂર્ણ ત્યાગી છીએ, તેથી સ્ત્રી-સ્પર્શ ન થાય તે માટે દૂર રહ્યા.” આ સાંભળી શેઠના હૃદયમાં સાચા નિર્લોભી-નિષ્કામી સંતો મળ્યાની પરમ શાંતિ થઈ.
તે જ સમયે રામાનુજાનંદ સ્વામી અને નાના ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી (પૂર્વાશ્રમના બે સંન્યાસી ભાઈઓ) પણ ત્યાં ભિક્ષા લેવા આવ્યા. તેમના મુખેથી પ્રગટ પરબ્રહ્મ સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાનના અવતાર અને ઐશ્વર્યની વાતો સાંભળી શેઠને પ્રભુદર્શનની તીવ્ર તાલાવેલી લાગી. શેઠે અતિ મૂલ્યવાન કેવડા-ગુલાબના અત્તરની શીશી બંને સંન્યાસીઓને આપી વિનંતી કરી કે, “આ અત્તર પ્રગટ સ્વામિનારાયણ પ્રભુને ધરાવજો અને તેમને વૃંદાવન પધારવા મારી નમ્ર અરજ કરજો.”
બંને સંતો ગઢપુર પહોંચ્યા અને શ્રીજીમહારાજના ચરણોમાં અત્તરની શીશી અર્પણ કરી શેઠની ભક્તિ જણાવી. શ્રીહરિએ પ્રસન્ન થઈ સભામાં સર્વે સંતો-ભક્તોને અત્તરના ચાંદલા કર્યા અને ભવિષ્યવાણી ભાખી: “લક્ષ્મીચંદ શેઠના ભાગ્યમાં આ દેહે અમારાં દર્શન નથી, પણ તેમની અનન્ય સંતસેવાના પ્રતાપે અમે તેમને કાઠિયાવાડમાં સત્સંગીના ઘેર જન્મ આપીશું અને અમારો સાક્ષાત્ સ્પર્શ-દર્શન કરાવીશું!” વૃંદાવનમાં પ્રભુદર્શનની અધીરાઈમાં ઘોડે સવાર થઈ કાઠિયાવાડ નીકળેલા લક્ષ્મીચંદ શેઠનું માર્ગમાં ઘોડો ભડકતાં અકસ્માતે અવસાન થયું. પ્રભુના વચન મુજબ તેઓ કારિયાણીમાં નથુ પટેલ તરીકે અવતર્યા અને બાળપણમાં જ સદગુરુ ગુણાતીતાનંદ સ્વામી તથા સાક્ષાત્ શ્રીહરિનો યોગ પામી એકાંતિક ભક્ત બન્યા.

कारियाणी के नथु पटेल और वृंदावन के लक्ष्मीचंद सेठ का पूर्वजन्म
श्रीजी महाराज कारियाणी में दिव्य सभा में विराजमान थे। सभा में बैठे एक आठ-दस वर्ष के अबोध बालक की ओर संकेत करते हुए महाराज ने रामानुजानंद स्वामी और छोटे गोपालानंद स्वामी से पूछा, “स्वामी! क्या आप इन्हें पहचानते हैं?” रामानुजानंद स्वामी ने कहा, “महाराज! यह तो कारियाणी के पटेल का पुत्र नथु है।” श्रीहरि मुस्कुराए, “यह इस लोक की पहचान है, इनके पूर्वजन्म की पहचान कीजिए! इन्हें आप पूर्वजन्म में वृंदावन में मिले थे। वे धर्मात्मा लक्ष्मीचंद सेठ ही इस जन्म में नथु पटेल बने हैं, जिन्होंने आप दोनों संतों की अपार सेवा की थी। उसी संचित पुण्य के प्रभाव से इनका जन्म सत्संगी कुल में हुआ और हमारा प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन प्राप्त हुआ!”
वृंदावन में लक्ष्मीचंद सेठ नामक एक विशाल हृदय, कुबेर-तुल्य धनी वैरागी महाजन रहते थे। उन्होंने श्रीरंगजी भगवान का भव्य मंदिर बनवाया था और मंदिर के आँगन में बाईस मन शुद्ध स्वर्ण से मढ़ा हुआ दिव्य गरुड़-स्तंभ स्थापित किया था! वे नित्य अपने करकमलों से साधुओं को अन्नक्षेत्र (सदाव्रत) में भोजन कराते थे। एक बार सुखानंद स्वामी विचरण करते हुए वहाँ पहुँचे। पंक्ति में स्त्रियाँ होने के कारण त्यागी सुखानंद स्वामी बहुत दूर खड़े रहे। जब स्त्रियाँ चली गईं, तभी उन्होंने अन्न ग्रहण किया। सेठ ने विस्मित होकर पूछा, “महात्मन! आप इतनी दूर क्यों खड़े थे?” सुखानंद स्वामी ने कहा, “हम प्रकट परब्रह्म श्री स्वामीनारायण के परमहंस हैं। हम कंचन-कामिनी के पूर्ण त्यागी हैं, अतः स्त्री-स्पर्श से बचने हेतु दूर खड़े थे।” यह सुनकर सेठ को अंतःकरण में असीम शीतलता का अनुभव हुआ कि संसार में ऐसे निष्कलंक संत भी विद्यमान हैं!
उसी समय रामानुजानंद और छोटे गोपालानंद (पूर्वाश्रम के संन्यासी भ्राता) भी वहाँ पधारे। उनके श्रीमुख से स्वामीनारायण महाप्रभु के प्राकट्य की महिमा सुनकर सेठ को प्रभु के साक्षात् दर्शन की तीव्र उत्कंठा जाग उठी। उन्होंने अत्यंत सुगंधित बहुमूल्य इत्र की शीशी संतों को अर्पित करते हुए प्रार्थना की, “यह इत्र भगवान स्वामीनारायण को चढ़ाइएगा और मेरी ओर से वृंदावन पधारने की विनती कीजिएगा।”
संतों ने गढ़पुर पहुँचकर वह इत्र श्रीजी महाराज को समर्पित किया। महाराज ने प्रसन्न होकर सभा के समस्त संतों-भक्तों को उस दिव्य इत्र का तिलक लगाया और उद्घोष किया, “सेठ के इस देह में हमारे दर्शन का योग नहीं है, किंतु उनकी निष्काम संतसेवा के प्रभाव से हम उन्हें सत्संगी के घर जन्म देकर अपने साक्षात् दर्शन का सुख देंगे!” उधर वृंदावन में विरह से व्याकुल होकर जब सेठ अश्व पर सवार होकर काठियावाड़ आ रहे थे, तो मार्ग में दुर्घटना में उनका देहांत हो गया। प्रभु के वचनानुसार वे कारियाणी में नथु पटेल बने और बाल्यावस्था में ही सद्गुरु गुणातीतानंद स्वामी और साक्षात् श्रीहरि की संगति पाकर एकांतिक भक्त बने।

Nathu Patel of Kariyani: Past Life as Sheth Lakshmichand of Vrindavan
While presiding over an assembly in Kariyani, Bhagwan Swaminarayan pointed toward an eight-year-old village boy and asked Sadguru Ramanujanand Swami and Nana Gopalanand Swami: “Swami, do you recognize him?” Ramanujanand Swami replied, “Maharaj, he is Nathu, the son of the local Patel.” Shriji Maharaj smiled knowingly: “That is merely his mortal identity in this life; recognize his eternal soul! You met him in your previous life in Vrindavan. The magnificent philanthropist Sheth Lakshmichand has now reincarnated as Nathu Patel! Because he rendered immense service to both of you, he was blessed to be reborn in the Satsang fellowship and attain Our direct divine darshan!”
In Vrindavan, Sheth Lakshmichand had been an exceedingly wealthy merchant of deep Vaishnava piety. He had financed the grand temple of Shri Rangji, adorning the massive courtyard pillar with over eight hundred kilograms of pure beaten gold! Despite his immense fortune, he personally served food daily at his charitable kitchen (sadavrat). Once, Paramhansa Sukhanand Swami arrived there while touring north India. Seeing women in the distribution queue, the strictly celibate ascetic stood far back. Only after the crowd had cleared did he step forward to accept grain. Intrigued, Sheth Lakshmichand asked, “Revered monk! Why did you stand so far away for so long?” Sukhanand Swami replied serenely, “We are the paramhansas of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Having completely renounced worldly wealth and lust, we maintain strict distance to preserve total celibacy.” Deeply moved by such unparalleled purity, Lakshmichand felt that he had encountered true saints.
Around the same time, Ramanujanand Swami and Nana Gopalanand Swami (then travelling ascetic brothers seeking God) also arrived at the alms house. Listening to their thrilling accounts of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s divine incarnation on earth, Lakshmichand developed an intense longing for Shrihari’s darshan. Handing them an exquisite vial of rare, concentrated attar (perfumed essence), he prayed: “Please anoint Bhagwan Swaminarayan with this perfume and convey my humble plea for Him to grace Vrindavan.”
Reaching Gadhpur, the ascetics offered the attar at Maharaj’s lotus feet and narrated the merchant’s ardent devotion. Overjoyed, Shrihari applied the fragrant attar to the foreheads of all the assembled sadhus and devotees, uttering a divine prophecy: “Lakshmichand’s destiny does not permit him to behold Us in that physical body. However, as the divine reward for his selfless service to holy sadhus, We shall grant him birth into a devout Satsangi household where he shall behold and touch Our divine form!” In Vrindavan, overcome with yearning to meet Maharaj, Lakshmichand set out on horseback toward Kathiawad. Tragically, along the desolate highway, his horse startled and threw him, resulting in his instant demise. Exactly as prophesied, his soul was reborn in Kariyani as Nathu Patel. Under the tutelage of Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami and in the physical presence of Shrihari, he blossomed into an exalted, staunch devotee.
