The Burlap Garments Episode in Gadhpur and the Divine Humor of Brahmanand Swami

Once, Shri Hari was residing in Gadhpur. To test and elevate the virtues of detachment, humility, and obedience among the santos, He would often introduce various spiritual episodes (prakarans) and novel disciplines. One day, He summoned Sadguru Muktanand Swami and Sadguru Brahmanand Swami and announced, “From today, We wish to initiate a new discipline by having the santos wear coarse burlap (tat - sackcloth) measuring four cubits (hath).” While Sadguru Muktanand Swami immediately submitted with reverent obedience, Brahmamuni (Brahmanand Swami), who shared a deeply intimate and loving camaraderie with Shri Hari, gently countered, “O Maharaj! How can holy santos renounce their sacred saffron robes to put on such rough sackcloth?” Shri Hari did not utter a single word in reply; instead, He took off His own divine clothes, wrapped a piece of rough burlap around Himself, and sat down.

Witnessing this, tears welled up in the eyes of Sadguru Muktanand Swami, the loving mother of the Satsang fellowship. He pleaded emotionally, “O Prabhu! Please take off this rough sackcloth and adorn Your divine garments again! Give the burlap to us, and we will gladly wear it. Our entire existence is consecrated solely to obeying Your supreme will.”

Shri Hari then began cutting the burlap into three-cubit lengths and distributing them among all the santos. Sadguru Brahmanand Swami also came forward, and like everyone else, Shri Hari handed him a three-cubit piece. Sadguru Brahmanand Swami wrapped it around himself and remarked, “O Prabhu, kindly grant me a piece that is one cubit longer. My body is quite bulky, and this falls short by four fingers!”

Smiling playfully, Shri Hari said, “Brahmamuni, emaciate your body!” To this, Swami wittily replied, “O Maharaj! Even if I begin fasting strictly from today, it might take ten days to shed even a little weight! How could my body slim down instantly?”

Shri Hari smiled and insisted, “Everyone has received three cubits, so you too shall receive only three cubits!”

Hearing this, Brahmanand Swami began looking all around—up, down, left, and right—as if searching for something. Shri Hari asked with curiosity, “Swami, what are you looking for all around?”

Brahmamuni replied with profound wit and unconditional devotion, “O Maharaj! I am searching to see if across this earth, even in an area as tiny as a fingernail, there exists another God anywhere so that I might go to Him! But cast my eyes wherever I may, presently I cannot see any God other than You alone!”

The moment Swami uttered these words of pure, unalloyed surrender, the pieces of burlap slipped from Shri Hari’s hands and fell to the ground. Tears of ecstatic joy rushed into Maharaj’s eyes. Overwhelmed with divine love, He rushed forward, embraced Brahmanand Swami tightly, and was exceedingly pleased with him.

While this burlap garment episode was underway among the santos, Jiva Khachar arrived and prostrated before Shri Hari, asking, “O Maharaj! Do You intend to keep householder devotees like us happy or not?” The all-knowing Shri Hari asked affectionately, “What happened, Jiva Bapu? Has any trouble befallen you?”

Jiva Bapu replied earnestly, “O Maharaj! You have started clothing the holy sadhus in coarse sackcloth—that calamity itself stands visibly embodied before us! Why have You dressed these santos in rough gunny sacks when they rightfully wear divine saffron robes? When we householders offer sanctified garments to detached ascetics, we earn the merit of receiving divine garments in our destiny. But in return for burlap, we certainly do not wish to receive burlap robes in the afterlife! Therefore, if You truly wish to keep Your householder devotees happy and blessed, please graciously bring an end to this burlap robe rule!”

Shri Hari was thoroughly delighted by Jiva Bapu’s childlike sincerity, pure faith, and deep reverence for the santos. He said, “Your reasoning is indeed true, Bapu!” Then addressing the gathering, He commanded, “O santos! Remove these burlap garments and put on your sacred saffron robes once again.” Thus, upon the sincere petition of Jiva Khachar, the burlap garment episode came to an immediate and joyful conclusion, filling Jiva Khachar and all the devotees with immense happiness.
