Kadvabhagat of Gothap and the Immersion of the Mango Orchard

Kadvabhagat of Gothap village was a sincere spiritual seeker who owned a lush mango orchard. Once, traveling saints graced his village, and through their divine company, he was drawn into Satsang and became a devout disciple. After staying for a few days, the saints announced, “We will now proceed to Vadtal.” Kadvabhagat asked humbly, “May I accompany you?” With their permission, he joined them on the pilgrimage to Vadtal. Upon beholding Shri Hari in Vadtal, an absolute and unshakeable conviction of Maharaj’s supreme divinity settled within his heart. After staying in Vadtal for several days, he returned to his village with a firm resolution: “From now on, whatever mangoes this orchard yields, all shall be offered to Shri Hari and His holy saints; and I shall partake only of those mangoes that Maharaj gives back as prasadi.” That season, he loaded cartloads of ripe mangoes, traveled to Vadtal, and devoutly offered them at the holy feet of Shri Hari. Shri Hari granted some mangoes back to him as sanctified prasadi. Kadvabhagat ate some of the prasadi himself and presented the rest to the local landlord (Darbar) of his village. Relishing the prasadi mangoes, the Darbar praised them exceedingly, saying, “I have never tasted such heavenly sweet mangoes in all my life!” The Darbar inwardly coveted the fruit, thinking, “Instead of taking all these sweet mangoes to Vadtal, if only Kadvabhagat gave them to us, how wonderful it would be!” Yet, he hesitated to confront Kadvabhagat directly. Four or five years passed in this manner, with Kadvabhagat earning his simple livelihood by growing modest grains.

The estate administrator (karbhari) of the landlord was an ill-intentioned, deceitful man. He whispered malicious counsel into the Darbar’s ears: “Darbar! Seize this orchard land back from this farmer; after all, everything is in your hands! If you permit, I shall go on your behalf and tell Kadvabhagat.” Securing the landlord’s consent, the karbhari approached Kadvabhagat and demanded, “Surrender this mango orchard back to the Darbar; the Darbar is willing to give you any other piece of land in exchange.” Kadvabhagat pondered that the sweet mangoes of this orchard were solely dedicated to serving Shri Hari and His saints and devotees every year; if surrendered, this divine service would cease. Thus, he flatly refused the karbhari’s demand, though the incident left him deeply sorrowful.

His mind flared with anger toward the wicked administrator, but he immediately recalled the injunctions of the holy saints: never give in to wrath and always maintain inner equanimity. Yet, an intense inner grief gripped him: “Alas! Through this mortal body, I will no longer be able to serve the Lord with the mangoes from this orchard.” Distressed, he walked into the orchard. There, Shri Hari manifested in divine vision before him, placed His holy hand upon his head, and consoled him, “Kadvabhagat! Your devotion and service have been fully accepted. Now, do not worry or fret about worldly affairs.” Shri Hari’s comforting words brought profound solace to the devotee’s heart.

Returning home, he lay on a cot in his courtyard, contemplating the situation. He suddenly remembered a spiritual discourse he had once attended, where the family priest performed the ceremonial invocation (sthapana) of Lord Ganesha and, upon conclusion of the ritual, performed the ritual farewell and immersion (visarjan) with sacred mantras. Kadvabhagat resolved in his heart that just as deities are ritually established and immersed, this mango orchard too could undergo visarjan. Early the next morning, he went to the grove. Pouring sacred water at the base of every single mango tree, he offered water libations, praying: “O living beings (jivatmas) residing within these mango trees! You have faithfully rendered your divine service unto Shri Hari; now may your souls attain ultimate spiritual liberation!”

Soon after, the administrator deceitfully snatched away the orchard under the guise of royal authority. However, due to the power of Kadvabhagat’s heartfelt farewell prayers and water libations, within just a few days, all the vibrant mango trees withered away completely!

Having lost his land, Kadvabhagat lived quietly at home. Although he endured severe financial hardships, he continuously prayed with pure, desireless devotion: “O Lord! Master of infinite realms, I desire nothing of this world; only grant me entrance into Your eternal Akshardham when my time comes.” Although his physical body was afflicted with illness, he never prayed to Shri Hari for bodily relief.

He never cast his glance toward that orchard again. Living in total detachment and desirelessness (nispruh), after a few days, bidding everyone ‘Jai Swaminarayan,’ he blissfully departed for Akshardham.
