Purnanand Swami’s Pang of Separation and Gajo Gadhvi’s Unswerving Faith

Once, Shri Hari was gracing Gadhpur with His divine presence. One day, He was seated in the west-facing room near the jambu tree, leaning against a luxurious mashru bolster and mattress on a cot (dholiyo). A curtain was drawn across the doorway. Sadguru Purnanand Swami had been touring the villages of the Jhalawad region for Satsang propagation. Overwhelmed by an intense longing (virah) and aching separation from Shriji Maharaj, he rushed to Gadhpur. Learning that Shri Hari was inside the west-facing room, he sprinted forward to have His divine darshan, but the attendants (parshads) stopped him at the threshold. Unable to endure the pangs of separation, Purnanand Swami took up his sitar and began pouring his heart out in soul-stirring Charan bardic poetry:

“Tara virah baane vendhani, jaani re mune maarya Mohanji..!
Purananand kahe aavi jo peedye, paadsho ma koi praani jaani..!!”

(Meaning: “Pierced by the arrows of separation from You, O Mohan, my heart is deeply wounded! Purnanand prays—do not let any soul suffer such agonizing pain of separation!”)

As he sang one verse after another, tears streamed profusely from his eyes. He had sung merely two or three verses when Shri Hari within could bear it no longer. He swiftly rose from His cot, personally pulled aside the curtain, and rushed outside. He embraced Purnanand Swami tightly just as he stood playing his sitar, adorned him with a fragrant flower garland, and placed His divine hand upon his head, blessing him abundantly.

In the course of time, owing to personal pride, Purnanand Swami relinquished his saintly robes and returned to worldly life, resuming his original name, Gajo Gadhvi. However, the firm conviction and unwavering faith he had developed in Shri Hari remained immaculate and unshakeable throughout his entire life.

Later, on the auspicious occasion of the wedding of his crown prince Amarshinhji, King Ranmalsinhji of Dhrangadhra extended a special royal invitation to Gajo Gadhvi, honoring him as his former court poet, Dashaundi, and an erudite Charan scholar. Gajo Gadhvi attended the wedding ceremonies at Dhrangadhra. The Maharaja specifically requested him to compose a panegyric celebratory poem (kavitta) honoring the prince’s nuptials. For a moment, Gajo Gadhvi stood speechless; then, folding his hands, he replied humbly to the king: “O Great King! With this mouth, I have sung the divine glories of the manifest Supreme Lord, the Master of all realms; with this mouth, I have chewed the sacred beetle-leaves (paan-beeda) sanctified by His divine hands. To now praise a mortal human being with this very mouth would be equivalent to chewing on worthless coals! Therefore, please forgive me.”

Maharaja Ranmalsinhji of Dhrangadhra tempted him, saying, “I shall grant you two entire villages as a royal gift!” To this, Gajo Gadhvi replied fearlessly, “For one upon whom Shriji Maharaj has already bestowed the entire Akshardham in His name, what value could a province of merely two villages hold? What significance could worldly lands and fiefs possess before the Supreme Abode?”

Hearing his steadfast devotion, the Maharaja said with deep reverence, “Even if you have not composed a poem, a divine Charan poet cannot leave our royal threshold empty-handed. I bow to your extraordinary and resolute devotion toward your Ishtadev. As a token of royal honor, I present you with a wind-swift steed (pavaniyo ghodo).”
