Khushal Bhatt and the King of Idar’s Tax

Once, the King of Idar levied an oppressive tax on the Brahmins. The Brahmins had firm faith that if they visited Khushal Bhatt (the pre-monastic name of Sadguru Gopalanand Swami) in the village of Todla, he would certainly speak to the king on their behalf and bring them relief. Placing their trust in him, about four hundred Brahmins gathered and approached Khushal Bhatt in Todla, narrating their plight and praying for assistance.

The young Khushal Bhatt bowed respectfully to everyone and said, “Come, I shall accompany you right away.” He led all the Brahmins directly to the royal court of the King of Idar. Presenting profound scriptural injunctions, Khushal Bhatt explained in detail that levying taxes upon virtuous Brahmins was contrary to dharma. Despite his patient reasoning, the king remained arrogant, stubborn, and obstinately refused to relent. Realizing that the proud king would not listen to gentle reason, Khushal Bhatt led all the Brahmins to the eastern gateway of Idar city, making camp beneath a tree near a stepwell (vav). There, Khushal Bhatt bathed, performed his routine evening prayers (sandhya), and instructed all the Brahmins to chant the Narayan Dhun in unison. Exercising his formidable yogic powers, Khushal Bhatt caused the bowel and urinary functions of the king and all his courtiers to cease abruptly, and their vision turned dizzy. With severe constipation and extreme bloating, their abdomens swelled painfully, leaving them writhing in agonizing torment as if their very life-breaths were departing. The king immediately realized that this sudden catastrophe was retribution for offending the holy Brahmins. Acknowledging his grave mistake, the king rushed in anguish to seek their pardon. He circumambulated all the Brahmins, prostrated before them, begged for forgiveness, and revoked the unjust tax immediately. All the Brahmins were overjoyed with Khushal Bhatt, and the king along with his courtiers was filled with profound reverence and awe upon witnessing the divine power of the young Khushal Bhatt.

The king then reverently welcomed Khushal Bhatt into his royal palace and pleaded with folded hands, “O revered one! I have no son, and without an heir, how will my royal lineage continue? Please bestow your grace upon me so that I may be blessed with a son. In return, I will build a grand mansion (haveli) for you and appoint you as the official preceptor (Rajguru) of my state!” Hearing the king’s worldly offer, Khushal Bhatt laughed heartily and replied, “I have no desire for a mansion, nor do I want any village, nor do I wish to become a Rajguru! If you desire a noble son, marry the princess of the King of Mansa, and you will surely be blessed with a son. Furthermore, he will grow to become a true devotee of Bhagwan.” Imparting these auspicious blessings to the king, Khushal Bhatt returned to his home in the village of Todla.

In due course, the King of Idar wedded the princess of Mansa, and she gave birth to Prince Javansinghji. By the divine blessings of Khushal Bhatt (Sadguru Gopalanand Swami), Prince Javansinghji became an exemplary, staunch Ekantik devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. In front of his royal palace, he constructed a magnificent, towering Shikharbaddh Mandir dedicated to Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan. He frequently invited the holy sadhus to his palace and court for spiritual visits (padhramani), serving them with immense love and deep reverence.
