Sadhus Carrying Mango Baskets and Shrihari’s Grace upon a Rajput Youth

Once, Sadguru Sachchidanand Swami and Sadguru Adharanand Swami—both epitomes of pure devotion—were carrying heavy baskets containing over fifty kilograms of sweet, ripe mangoes on their heads all the way from Gujarat to Gadhpur for Shriji Maharaj. While walking through the lonely wilderness between the villages of Nani Boru and Bholad, near the Bhimnath Mahadev shrine by the Kui lake, an arrogant ascetic (bava) spotted them. Greedily eyeing the mangoes, he shouted coarsely, “Hey sadhus! Where are you carrying such sweet mangoes?” Sadguru Sachchidanand Swami gently replied, “To Gadhpur, for Bhagwan Swaminarayan!”

Hearing the divine name of Swaminarayan, the sectarian recluse flew into a rage and demanded, “Leave all these mangoes right here for us!” When the sadhus declined, he began striking their backs violently with a heavy stick. Although hurting from the blows, the sadhus remembered Shrihari’s paramount commandment that an ascetic must never retaliate with violence against aggressors, but bear hardship with saintly forbearance. To appease him, they offered him some mangoes, but blinded by greed, he followed them all the way to Senja Kund, relentlessly beating them to seize the entire load.

At that crucial moment, a young Rajput horseman rode into view along the deserted trail. Witnessing a violent monk brutally thrashing two gentle, defenseless ascetics, the Kshatriya warrior roared with righteous indignation, “You scoundrel! Why are you assaulting these innocent sadhus?” Filled with arrogance, the bava hurled insults at the Rajput as well. His warrior blood boiling, the young Rajput instantly leaped off his horse, unclasped his heavy bridle, and lashed the bava vigorously, giving him a thorough lesson. He tied the belligerent recluse firmly to the trunk of a prickly Khijado tree and poured water over its roots, causing aggressive tree-ants to swarm out and sting the bava all over. Crying out in agony, the bava begged for mercy. The noble Rajput restored all the mangoes to the sadhus, bowed reverently before them, and said, “Revered saints, please proceed fearlessly on your holy journey; I shall keep watch over this rogue a while longer.” After the saints had walked safely ahead, the youth released the bava with a stern warning.

Reaching Gadhpur, the two saintly brothers offered the baskets of mangoes and prostrated before Shrihari. Knowing everything in His heart, Shriji Maharaj lovingly embraced Sachchidanand Swami and Adharanand Swami, immensely pleased by their supreme adherence to the vows of non-retaliation and forgiveness. Offering the mangoes in the midday meal, Maharaj relished them with great delight. Upon hearing the account of the Rajput youth, Shrihari raised His divine hands and blessed him with profound grace: “The noble soul who protected such innocent, devoted sadhus shall never lack food or clothing in this mortal world, and at the end of his life, We shall personally welcome him into Our supreme Akshardham.”
