The Meeting of Gajo Gadhvi (Purnanand Swami) and Kaba Gandhi
Sadguru Shri Purnanand Swami was born into the sacred Charan community (Taparia clan) in the village of Hebatpur near Viramgam. In his pre-monastic life, he was known as Gajo Gadhvi. At his very first darshan of Shriji Maharaj—just as a magnet inexorably draws iron, captivated by the majestic crest-tassel (chhogo) swaying gracefully upon Maharaj’s turban—he attained firm conviction: “He is undoubtedly the Supreme Lord Purushottam Narayan Himself.” Embracing monastic renunciation at the lotus feet of Shri Hari, he was initiated as a sadhu and named Purnanand Swami.
Over time, due to an innate sense of self-respect and pride, feeling slighted in an assembly, he relinquished his monastic robes, resumed his secular identity as Gajo Gadhvi, and returned to his ancestral estate (garas). However, his cousins refused to hand over possession of his ancestral lands and house. Consequently, he moved to Rajkot to pursue legal recourse in the British judicial courts for the restoration of his rightful property.
During his four-year stay in Rajkot, he met Kaba (Karamchand) Gandhi—the father of Mahatma Gandhi—who was a devout Vaishnava and served as the chief administrator (Diwan). Gajo Gadhvi rented a small room close to Kaba Gandhi’s residence. He ate only a single meal at midday, and late at night, latching his door, he would play the sarod and sing Shriji Maharaj’s devotional hymns with deep, rapturous devotion. Hearing these melodious hymns through the night, Kaba Gandhi was deeply moved and occasionally visited his room to listen with reverence.
One night, the Swami sang devotional verses in the Kachhi Kafi melody: “Kahan se nedo, Kahan se nedo, lagyo mane Kahan se nedo…” (“My soul has fallen deeply in love with Kanhaiya…”) Deeply enchanted by this devotional outpouring, Kaba Gandhi visited the royal palace the following day. The Queen Mother—regent of the young ruler, Thakore Saheb Bavajiraj, and a staunch Vaishnava herself—heard Kaba Gandhi’s praise of Gajo Gadhvi’s exceptional Krishna-kirtans and ordered him to be invited to the court.
When Diwan Kaba Gandhi conveyed the royal invitation, Gajo Gadhvi politely declined, explaining, “Though I have returned to worldly life, I strictly observe the code of an ascetic. Therefore, I cannot sit before an assembly of women to sing devotional songs. If I recover my ancestral estate and house, only then will I embrace full householder life; otherwise, clad in simple white garments, I shall pass my days adhering to the vows of a renunciant.”
Hearing this unbending resolve, Kaba Gandhi’s admiration for him grew even deeper. Being an astute diplomat, Kaba Gandhi proposed a thoughtful solution: “The Queen Mother has established a private shrine (haveli) in the Darbargarh where the sacred murti of Thakorji resides. You shall sit before Thakorji and offer kirtan-bhakti. A screen (chik) will be drawn, behind which the Queen Mother will listen to your hymns. No woman will come before you; only nobles, courtiers, and we men will sit in your presence.” Agreeing that singing before Thakorji was wholly appropriate, Gajo Gadhvi accepted. The next day at four in the afternoon, Kaba Gandhi arrived in a carriage (shigram) and escorted him to the palace.
After offering obeisance to Shri Thakorji in the temple shrine, Gajo Gadhvi tuned the strings of his sarod and began singing: “Sahajanand Swami re, pragatat na aa same re, to prani koi paamat nahi bhav-paar…” (“Had Sahajanand Swami not manifested in this era, no soul could ever have crossed the vast ocean of worldly existence…”)
Hearing this, the Queen Mother hastily interjected from behind the curtain, “Had Sahajanand Swami not manifested, would no soul have ever attained liberation?”
Hearing this question, Gajo Gadhvi’s intense devotional conviction and self-respect were deeply wounded. He immediately stopped singing, detuned the strings of his sarod, and stood up to leave. Shocked and distressed, the Queen Mother and the gathered assembly felt remorseful and pleaded with him to stay. Gajo Gadhvi lamented with profound remorse: “The mouth that once sang devotional kirtans solely before the Supreme Lord Swaminarayan is today singing before an assembly of women! Shame on this human existence!” Saying so, he slapped his own cheek hard with his hand!
Witnessing this raw display of devotion and remorse, everyone present was shaken. The Queen Mother and Kaba Gandhi profusely apologized for the interruption and begged him to resume singing. However, being a spirited Charan devotee of unwavering principles, he remained completely unyielding; tucking his sarod under his arm, he departed at once.
The Thakore Saheb and Kaba Gandhi, profoundly impressed by his uncompromising devotion to God, presented him with 101 Jamshahi koris and a fine white woolen robe of honor (shirpav), assuring him, “When I visit the British Residency, I shall personally recommend your property case to the Political Agent.” Gajo Gadhvi then returned to his lodgings by carriage.
Later, through the gracious recommendation of the devout Darbar Abhay Singhji of Lodhika and subsequent legal proceedings, Gajo Gadhvi won his case within a few months, regaining his ancestral lands and house. He moved back to Hebatpur, constructed a beautiful Hari Mandir, consecrated divine murtis, and settled into householder life, eventually being blessed with a son named Narandan. Gajo Gadhvi spent his days and nights serving in the temple and chanting the glory of Shriji Maharaj.
In his old age, as his time to depart the mortal world drew near, he had a divine vision one night of Sadguru Brahmanand Swami and numerous saints, who said, “Come, Gajo Gadhvi! We have come to take you to Akshardham.” Gajo Gadhvi replied, “Swami, you are my revered guru, but I was initiated by Shriji Maharaj Himself! I will not depart on your invitation or anyone else’s. Only when my Lord of the Crest-Tassel (Chhogavalo Bhagwan) arrives Himself, adorning a magnificent crest-tassel on His turban and riding His mare Manki, will I accompany Him!” The saints smiled and vanished.
For the next three days and nights, Gajo Gadhvi prayed fervently with yearning cries and heartfelt kirtans, entreating Shri Hari to take him to His abode. To honor the firm pledge (tek) of His beloved servant, Shriji Maharaj Himself manifested riding the mare Manki, His turban crowned with a glorious, swaying crest-tassel, accompanied by Sadguru Brahmanand Swami and a retinue of holy saints. Beholding the divine vision, Gajo Gadhvi joyfully proclaimed to all around him, “Shriji Maharaj has arrived in person; I am departing with Him to the divine abode!” Folding his hands with a final “Jai Swaminarayan,” he peacefully attained Akshardham.
