Sadguru Vignananand Swami and Amarsinh of Shrigam
Sadguru Vignananand Swami had learned the art of classical music from Sadguru Muktanand Swami. He was exceptionally skilled in musical arts and enjoyed renowned fame as an accomplished musician among all the Nand saints. His voice was resonant, rich, and melodious; therefore, before the commencement of every holy assembly in Gadhpur, when the saints sang kirtans, he would sing and play musical instruments with profound devotion. On numerous occasions, Shri Hari was immensely pleased, bestowing upon him sanctified items (prasadi) and encouragement.
Observing Sadguru Vignananand Swami’s extraordinary capability for spreading Satsang, his supreme spiritual yearning, and his unwavering faith in Shri Hari’s divine form, Shri Hari assigned him the duty of preaching in dense forest and mountainous regions. Revering Shri Hari’s command, Swami traveled extensively across remote territories such as Nimar, Khandesh, Zhadidesh, Rajasthan, Marwar, and the Jambusar-Bara region for Satsang propagation. When Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami composed the sacred scripture ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’, it was Sadguru Vignananand Swami who provided the list of names of the elevated, single-minded devotees (ekantik bhaktas) from those distant lands. In those hilly and forested areas where seekers did not comprehend Gujarati, Swami learned Marathi, Hindi, and Marwari to deliver spiritual discourses and guidance in their regional languages. Whenever congregations of devotees from those distant territories journeyed to Vadtal or Gadhpur for the divine darshan of Shri Hari, Maharaj was exceptionally pleased with Swami.
Once, while touring for Satsang with his group of saints, Vignananand Swami arrived at a small village named Shrigam near Jambusar. Upon their arrival, incited by hostile ascetic mendicants (bawas), some villagers began shouting, “Look, these Swaminarayan ascetics have arrived! Drive them out of the village, or else they will spoil our town!” Knowing their hostility, the saints peacefully moved to a quiet, secluded corner of the marketplace, tuned their musical instruments, and began singing devotional kirtans and chanting the divine Narayan dhun. After about an hour and a half, the genuine spiritual seekers (mumukshus) of the village were deeply impressed by the saints’ calm demeanor, humility, and divine aura. Approaching the saints reverently, they bowed and politely requested them to come to the town square (chaura), where they joyfully held a devotional kirtan assembly. Sadguru Vignananand Swami then delivered a spiritual discourse expounding on the glory of the manifest Supreme Lord, stating, “After wandering through 8.4 million life forms, this rare human birth has been obtained, and within it, the recognition of manifest Parabrahma has been granted. Therefore, before our eyes close forever, securing the liberation of our soul is the only true wisdom.” Hearing these uplifting words, the villagers recognized the divine purity of the genuine saints and earnestly pleaded with them to extend their stay.
That night, the spiritual gathering continued until late. The villagers requested, “Please stay here longer and build a mandir of Thakorji in our village.” The saints agreed, and through daily association with the holy saints (sant samagam), the entire atmosphere of the village was transformed within just a few days. Everyone began singing God’s praises with immense affection. In a short time, a small yet beautiful mandir was built. During this stay, the saints daily visited the farm of a devoted young man named Amarsinh to bathe. Amarsinh would lovingly draw water from the well for their baths and serve them farm-fresh vegetables and fruits with deep reverence. When the temple was completed and the saints prepared to depart for Vadtal, Sadguru Vignananand Swami, delighted by Amarsinh’s selfless devotion and service, blessed him, “Go, Amarsinh, you shall become very prosperous and happy!” A few days later, the ruler of the Jambusar province adopted Amarsinh as his legal heir and made him the king of that region. Whenever the saints visited that region thereafter, King Amarsinh would specially invite them to his village, host them with deep reverence, and earn their divine pleasure.
