દેવીદાન ગઢવી (સદગુરુ દેવાનંદ સ્વામી) નો જન્મ બળોલ ગામે થયો હતો. નાનપણથી પિતા જીજીભાઇના સંસ્કારો એમના મા ઉતરયા હતા. તેઓ સમજણા થયા ત્યારે થી રોજ પીતા સાથે બાજુ ના ધીંગડા ગામની સીમમાં સાંકળેશ્વર મહાદેવના મંદિરે પુજન કરવા જતા. એકદિવસ પીતા કાંઇક વહેવાર ના કામે બહારગામ ગયા હતા તે દેવીદાન એકલા જ મહાદેવજીનુ પુજન કરવા ગયા. દેવીદાનને પોતાની બાળઉમર ને કુમળા માનસ મા વિચાર આવ્યો કે મારી પુજા સાક્ષાત મહાદેવજી કેમ ન સ્વીકારે? એ વિચારે ભાવથી પુજન કર્યું ને આંખ મા આંસુ વહેવા લાગ્યા. સાંકળેશ્વર મહાદેવજી એ પૃગટ દીધા ને વર માંગવા કહ્યું. બાળ દેવીદાનજીએ પુર્વસંસકારવત પોતાનો મોક્ષ માંગ્યો. શીવજીએ આશીર્વાદ દીધા કે હાલ ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણ પૃગટ છે ને હમણાં તમારા ગામ બળોલ મા પધારશે. પોતાની જીભ કોણીએ અડાડે તો ભગવાન માનજે ને એમનુ શરણુ લેજે, એ તને અપનાવશે ને તને એ એમના મહાન કવિશીષ્ય ને સોંપશે.
થોડે દિવસે શ્રીહરિ જેતલપુર મા મહાયજ્ઞ કરીને ગામ બળોલ સંતો ભક્તો સાથે પધાર્યા ને ગામમાં શોભાયાત્રા ને સામૈયા થયા. શ્રીહરિ મનુષ્ય ચરિત્ર કરતા કહે કે “મને બહુ ભૂખ લાગી છે જે તૈયાર હોઇ એ લાવો.” એ વાત સાંભળતા જ ગામના હરિભક્ત રૈયા ખટાણા એ થૂંલી ને દૂધની તાંહળી જમવા દીધી. શ્રીહરિ તો ગાડાની ઉંધે બેઠા બેઠા જ જમવા માંડ્યા. થુલી મા દૂધ ભેળવી ને જમતા જમતા દૂધ ના રગડા કોણીએ પહોંચ્યા તે જીભ થી ચાટતા જતા હતા. આ દિવ્ય દર્શન યુવાન એવા દેવીદાને બજારમાં ઉભા થકા કર્યા ને પોતાને શ્રી સાંકળેશ્વર મહાદેવજીના આશીર્વાદ યાદ આવી ગયા ને સ્વામિનારાયણ પૃગટ ભગવાન છે એવો પોતાના મનમા પાકો નિશ્ચય થઇ ગયો. શ્રીહરિ ઉતારે પધાર્યા એટલે દેવીદાન આવીને પગે લાગ્યા ને બોલ્યા કે પૃભુ મને આપની સેવા મા રાખો..! શ્રીહરિએ માથે બે હાથ મુકયા ને બોલ્યા કે મુકતરાજ..! તમને લેવા તો અમે આજ બળોલ ગામે આવ્યા છીએ. એમ કરીને દેવીદાન નુ કાંડું સદગુરુ બૃહમાનંદ સ્વામીના હાથ મા સોંપ્યું. સમયજતા ભાગવતિ દીક્ષા આપીને દેવાનંદ સ્વામી એવું નામ પાડ્યું ને પોતે સદગુરુ બૃહ્માનંદ સ્વામી સાથે એમના પૃમુખ શીષ્ય તરીકે મંડળ મા આજ્ઞાંકિત થઇને જીવનભર રહ્યા. સદગુરુ બૃહમાનંદ સ્વામી ની જેમ જ કાવ્ય રચનાને ગાયકી મા સદગુરુ દેવાનંદ સ્વામી અજોડ હતા. એમના વૈરાગ્યના પદો ને પૃખર ગુજરાતી લેખક શ્રી કૃષ્ણલાલ ઝવેરી, કનૈયાલાલ મુન્શી તેમજ મહેન્દ્ર પડ્યા વગેરે એ પોતાના સાહિત્ય મા અવાર નવાર ટાંક્યા છે.
સંવત ૧૮૭૮ ના ફાગણ સુદ ત્રીજના દિવસે અમદાવાદ મા શ્રીનરનારાયણ દેવની પૃતિષ્ઠા વખતે દેશભરમાંથી ગવૈયાઓ એકઠા થયેલા એ વખતે શ્રીહરિએ સદગુરુ દેવાનંદ સ્વામી ને કિરતન ગાન કરવાનું કહ્યું હતું. એ સમયે સઘળા ગવૈયાઓ સ્વામીની ગાયકી થી આશ્ચર્ય પામ્યા ને નતમસ્તક થય ગયા હતા.
સુરત ના અરદેશર કોટવાલ ને પણ સંગીત નો બહુ ઉંડો શોખ હતો. જ્યારે શ્રીહરિ સુરત પધાર્યા ત્યારે તેમણે ગવૈયાઓ પાસે ગાન કરાવયુ. શ્રીહરિએ સદગુરુ દેવાનંદ સ્વામી ને ગાન કરવા નુ કહ્યું તે સ્વામી ના કિરતન સંગીત ને સાંભળતા જ ગવૈયાઓ નો ગર્વ ઉતરી ગયો હતો. ધરમપુરના રાજદરબાર મા પણ રાજગવૈયાઓ સાથે સ્વામીએ જ્યારે કાનડા પદો મારતે તાલે ગાવા મંડયા ત્યારે દૂકડ બજાવનાર ને તાલ મા ગમ પડી નહી. સ્વામી બે પદ બોલ્યા ત્યાં ગવૈયાઓ મુગ્ધ થઇ ગયા. શ્રીહરિએ રાજી થઇને ધોળી ડગલી ભેટ આપી હતી. બોટાદ મા રાણપુર ના હાકેમ પધાર્યા ત્યારે એમણે શ્રીહરિને હોળીના પદો સાંભળવાની ઇચ્છા કરી તો શ્રીહરિએ સદગુરુ દેવાનંદ સ્વામીને આજ્ઞા કરી ત્યારે સ્વામી એ વસંત ના રાગો મા કિરતનો ગાયા. હાકેમ ને સંગીતનું ઉંડુ જ્ઞાન હતું તે તલ્લીન થઇ ગયો. સ્વામી ના કિરતનો સાંભળીને શ્રીહરિનો આશ્રીત થયો.
શ્રીહરિ સ્વધામ સીધાવયા પછે સ્વામી સદગુરુ બૃહમાનંદ સ્વામી સાથે મૂળી મંદિરે જ રહેતા. પોતે મંદિરના ગર્ભગૃહ ની થાંભલીએ આર્તનાદથી વિરહ વૈરાગ્યને ઉપદેશના પદો ગાતા એ સત્સંગમા અજોડ છે.
સદગુરુ દેવાનંદ સ્વામી રચિત અંતકાળે આવી રે મારી શ્રી ઘનશ્યામ કરો સહાય રે..! એ પદો સાંભળી ને સદગુરુ બૃહ્માનંદ સ્વામીએ આશીર્વાદ દીધા હતા કે કોઇ મૃત્યુ સમયે કે પદો ગાશે કે સંભળાવશે તો એમને જમનું તેડું નહી આવે ને શ્રીહરિ તેડવા પધારશે.

बलोल के देवीदान (देवानंद स्वामी) और संगीत-भक्ति
सद्गुरु देवानंद स्वामी का प्राकट्य (पूर्व नाम देवीदान गढ़वी) बलोल गाँव में हुआ था। बाल्यावस्था से ही उन्हें अपने पिता जीजीभाई से उत्कृष्ट धार्मिक संस्कार प्राप्त हुए थे। बाल्यकाल से ही वे प्रतिदिन अपने पिता के साथ समीपवर्ती धींगड़ा गाँव की सीमा में स्थित सांकलेश्वर महादेव मंदिर में पूजन करने जाते थे। एक दिन जब उनके पिता किसी व्यावहारिक कार्य से बाहर गए हुए थे, तब बालक देवीदान अकेले ही महादेवजी की पूजा करने पहुँचे। बालक के कोमल हृदय में यह तीव्र भाव जागा कि ‘मेरी इस बाल-पूजा को साक्षात् महादेवजी प्रत्यक्ष स्वीकार क्यों नहीं करते?’ इस अनन्य भाव से उन्होंने अश्रुपूर्ण नेत्रों से भगवान शिव का अर्चन किया। भक्तवत्सल सांकलेश्वर महादेव साक्षात् प्रकट हो गए और वरदान माँगने को कहा। पूर्वजन्म के संस्कारवश बालक देवीदान ने अपने आत्यंतिक मोक्ष का वरदान माँगा। भगवान शिव ने आशीर्वाद दिया, “वर्तमान में स्वयं पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान स्वामीनारायण इस पृथ्वी पर प्रत्यक्ष विचरण कर रहे हैं। वे शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे गाँव बलोल में पधारेंगे। जब वे अपनी जीभ अपनी कोहनी तक स्पर्श कराएँ, तब उन्हें ही साक्षात् परमेश्वर जानकर उनकी शरण ग्रहण करना; वे तुम्हें अपनाकर अपने श्रेष्ठ कविकुल में समर्पित करेंगे।”
कुछ समय पश्चात श्रीहरि जेतलपुर में विशाल महाविष्णुयाग संपन्न कर समस्त संतों और भक्तों के साथ बलोल पधारे। गाँव में भव्य शोभायात्रा निकली। मानवी लीला करते हुए श्रीहरि बोले, “हमें बहुत तीव्र भूख लगी है, जो भी तैयार हो शीघ्र ले आइए।” यह सुनते ही गाँव के निष्ठावान भक्त रैया खटाणा तुरंत ताजी दूध-थूली (दूध और दलिए का व्यंजन) का काँसे का पात्र ले आए। श्रीजी महाराज बैलगाड़ी के जुए पर बैठकर ही प्रेम से आरोगने लगे। थूली में दूध मिलाकर आरोगते-आरोगते दूध की धार उनकी कोहनी तक बह निकली, जिसे महाराज ने अपनी पावन जिह्वा से चाट लिया। बाज़ार में खड़े युवा देवीदान ने जैसे ही यह अलौकिक दृश्य देखा, उन्हें तुरंत सांकलेश्वर महादेव का वरदान स्मरण हो आया! उनके अंतःकरण में अटल निश्चय हो गया कि यही साक्षात् पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान स्वामीनारायण हैं। महाराज जब विश्राम स्थल पर पधारे, तो देवीदान ने उनके चरणों में साष्टांग दंडवत कर प्रार्थना की, “हे प्रभु! मुझे सदा के लिए अपनी सेवा में स्वीकार कीजिए।” श्रीहरि ने उनके मस्तक पर दोनों हाथ रखकर वात्सल्य से कहा, “मुक्तराज! आपको ही अपने चरणों में लेने तो हम आज बलोल पधारे हैं!” इतना कहकर महाराज ने देवीदान का हाथ सद्गुरु ब्रह्मानंद स्वामी के करकमलों में सौंप दिया। कालांतर में भागवती दीक्षा देकर उनका नाम सद्गुरु देवानंद स्वामी रखा गया। वे आजीवन ब्रह्मानंद स्वामी के प्रमुख शिष्य के रूप में आज्ञा में रहे। काव्य-रचना और शास्त्रीय संगीत में देवानंद स्वामी अद्वितीय थे। उनके द्वारा रचित वैराग्य के मर्मस्पर्शी पदों को प्रसिद्ध गुजराती साहित्यकारों—कृष्णलाल झवेरी, कन्हैयालाल मुंशी आदि—ने अपने ग्रंथों में आदरपूर्वक उद्धृत किया है।
संवत १८७८ में अहमदाबाद में श्री नरनारायण देव की प्रतिष्ठा के समय देशभर के प्रख्यात संगीतकार एकत्र हुए थे। उस समय श्रीहरि की आज्ञा से जब देवानंद स्वामी ने कीर्तन गायन किया, तो सभी दिग्गज संगीतज्ञ नतमस्तक हो गए। सूरत के संगीत-मर्मज्ञ अरदेशर कोतवाल के समक्ष तथा धरमपुर के राजदरबार में भी स्वामी ने जब कठिन कानड़ा राग में द्रुत ताल पर कीर्तन गाए, तो बड़े-बड़े राजगायक और पखावजी चकित रह गए। श्रीहरि ने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें अपनी प्रसादी की श्वेत डगली (अंगरखा) भेंट की थी। बोटाद में जब राणपुर के संगीत-विद्वान मुस्लिम हाकिम ने होली के पद सुनने की इच्छा व्यक्त की, तो स्वामी ने वसंत राग में ऐसे अद्भुत पद गाए कि हाकिम तल्लीन होकर श्रीजी महाराज का अनन्य आश्रित बन गया।
श्रीहरि के स्वधाम गमन के पश्चात स्वामी मूली मंदिर में रहे। वे मंदिर के गर्भगृह के स्तंभ के सहारे खड़े होकर आर्तनाद से विरह और वैराग्य के जो पद गाते थे, वे सत्संग की अनमोल धरोहर हैं। स्वामी द्वारा रचित प्रसिद्ध पद “अंतकाले आवी रे मारी श्री घनश्याम करो सहाय रे…” सुनकर सद्गुरु ब्रह्मानंद स्वामी ने आशीर्वाद दिया था कि जो कोई भी अपने अंतकाल में यह पद गाएगा अथवा सुनेगा, उसे यमदूतों का भय नहीं रहेगा और साक्षात् श्रीहरि उसे अपने धाम में ले जाने पधारेंगे।

Balol’s Devidan (Devanand Swami) and Devotion through Music
Sadguru Devanand Swami (originally named Devidan Gadhvi) was born in the village of Balol. From his early years, he inherited sterling spiritual virtues from his father, Jijibhai. As a young boy, he accompanied his father daily to worship at the ancient Sankleshwar Mahadev temple situated on the outskirts of neighboring Dhingda village. One day, when his father was away on business, young Devidan went alone to perform the worship of Lord Shiva. A tender prayer arose in his pure heart: ‘Why does Lord Mahadev not accept my offerings directly in manifest form?’ Filled with this pure longing, he worshipped with tearful eyes. Delighted by his guileless devotion, Lord Sankleshwar Mahadev manifested before him and bade him ask for a boon. Prompted by latent spiritual impressions from previous births, young Devidan prayed solely for the ultimate salvation of his soul. Lord Shiva blessed him, saying, “At this present time, the Supreme Lord Swaminarayan is directly manifest on this earth. He shall soon visit your village of Balol. When You behold Him touching His tongue to His elbow, recognize Him as the manifest Supreme Lord and take His refuge; He shall embrace you and place you under His foremost poet-disciple.”
Sometime later, after conducting the monumental Mahavishnuyag in Jetalpur, Shrihari graced the village of Balol with a grand entourage of sadhus and devotees. A joyful procession swept through the village. Enacting a human pastime, Shrihari said, “We are intensely hungry; bring whatever is readily prepared!” Hearing this, a local devotee named Raiya Khatana promptly brought a bronze bowl filled with fresh thuli (porridge) and warm milk. Seated upon the yoke of an ox-cart, Shriji Maharaj began relishing the offering. As He mixed the porridge with milk, drops trickled down toward His elbow, which Maharaj playfully licked with His tongue. Standing in the village square, young Devidan witnessed this divine spectacle, and Lord Shiva’s prophecy flashed across his memory! An unshakeable conviction anchored within his soul that this was indeed Purna Purushottam Bhagwan Swaminarayan. When Maharaj arrived at His quarters, Devidan prostrated at His lotus feet and prayed, “O Lord! Please accept me forever in Your holy service!” Placing both holy hands upon his head, Shrihari smiled warmly: “O Muktaraj! It was solely to claim you that We have visited Balol today!” Saying this, Maharaj placed Devidan’s hand into the care of Sadguru Brahmanand Swami. Later, he was initiated into the monastic order as Sadguru Devanand Swami, remaining a devoted and obedient foremost disciple of Brahmanand Swami throughout his life. In poetic composition and classical music, Devanand Swami was peerless. His sublime verses on spiritual detachment (vairagya) have been celebrated by eminent Gujarati scholars, including Krishnalal Zaveri and Kanaiyalal Munshi.
In Samvat 1878, during the grand consecration of Shri Narnarayan Dev in Ahmedabad, renowned musicians from across the country had gathered. When Devanand Swami sang sacred hymns under Shrihari’s instruction, the master musicians were spellbound and bowed in humility. Similarly, before the music connoisseur Ardeshar Kotwal in Surat, and at the royal court of Dharampur, when Swami rendered fast-tempo verses in the complex Raga Kanada, court maestros and percussionists were bewildered by his virtuosity. Shrihari affectionately gifted Swami His own white royal coat (dagli). In Botad, when the Muslim governor (Hakim) of Ranpur expressed a desire to hear spring songs, Swami sang verses in Raga Vasant so soulfully that the governor became a lifelong follower of Shrihari.
Following Shrihari’s return to Akshardham, Swami resided at the Muli temple. Leaning against the pillar of the inner sanctum, he would pour his soul into poignant verses of divine separation, renunciation, and spiritual wisdom. Upon hearing his celebrated hymn, “Antkaale aavi re mari Shri Ghanshyam karo sahay re…” (Come to my aid at my final moment, O Shri Ghanshyam!), Sadguru Brahmanand Swami blessed that whoever sings or listens to this prayer at the time of death shall never face the messengers of death; Shrihari Himself will arrive to escort the soul to Akshardham.
