Nilkanth Varni and Darbar Bhagvansinhji in Kukad
For the ultimate redemption and salvation of countless souls, Nilkanth Varni Mahaprabhu undertook an epic spiritual journey (van-vicharan) traversing over 12,000 kilometers on foot. Sanctifying dense jungles, torrential rivers, serene lakes, desolate wastelands, villages, and towns across India, He arrived in Gujarat, blessing holy sites like Surat, the banks of the Narmada, Vadodara, Bochasan, Polarapur, Khodabhai’s charitable kitchen (sadavrat), and the gardens of Gorad village, before reaching the Saurashtra coast. Wherever Varni traveled, spiritual seekers (mumukshus) were instantly captivated by His radiant, divine form. People beheld Him with profound reverence and awe, and whenever someone inquired about His identity, He revealed His transcendent nature and gave indications of His divine mission ahead.
Continuing His pilgrimage, Nilkanth Varni arrived at the outskirts of Kukad village in Bhavnagar district. Walking through the heart of the village, He passed before the gateway (deli) of the local chieftain (gam-dhani), Darbar Bhagvansinhji. At that moment, Darbar Bhagvansinhji and his estate administrator (kamdar), Khoja Jiva Thakkar, were seated there. Nilkanth Varni offered the traditional greeting, “Namo Narayan,” and paused momentarily. The Darbar assumed that He was merely a wandering mendicant or young ascetic. However, as soon as he gazed upon Varni’s luminous countenance, deep reverence welled up in his heart. He asked, “O Brahmachari! Where do You reside? What is Your name, and what is Your caste?”
Nilkanth Varni answered with regal majesty and spiritual authority, “Darbar! Our homeland is Anirdesh (the transcendent Akshardham beyond mundane description), Our name is Anant (infinite), and by caste We are Brahm (the Supreme Divine Reality). Even We cannot count all of Our own names!” Having spoken these words, He quietly continued on His way. Although the Darbar could not fully comprehend the depth of these words, the divine utterances of Parabrahma Paramatma pierced through the spiritual coverings of his past births, bringing profound peace and divine coolness to his soul.
The Darbar’s manager, Jiva Thakkar, was keen-minded and discerning. He reflected, “This Varni radiates a completely unique divine aura; He is unlike any ordinary ascetic or sadhu. Never before have I heard such transcendent, mystical wisdom (agam-vani), nor have I witnessed such divine majesty in any mortal human being.” Realizing this, Jiva Thakkar immediately turned to the Darbar and said, “Bhagvansinhji Bapu! Believe it or not, He is a great, realized yogi! We made a mistake by not welcoming Him properly and persuading Him to stay.”
Bhagvansinhji Bapu was a sincere spiritual seeker at heart, so he immediately replied, “Jiva, what you say rings entirely true! Ever since He departed, His divine image has been playing constantly before my mind’s eye. Let us hurry after Him right away; He cannot have gone very far yet. We must bring Him back!”
With this resolve, both men hastened along the trail Nilkanth Varni had taken. Reaching the riverbank, they found Varni seated in the lotus posture (padmasana) upon a deerskin beneath the shade of a mango tree, absorbed in deep meditation with eyes closed. Beside Him lay His water gourd (tumbi-patra). They approached reverently, touched His lotus feet, and bowed down. Sensing their touch, Varni gently emerged from His meditation.
The village ruler Bhagvansinh Darbar earnestly pleaded, “O Brahmachari! It is not honorable for us if You depart hungry from our doorstep. Please accept our humble hospitality and grace the Darbargadh. Being unlettered, we could not fathom Your profound divine words; please explain them to us and sanctify us lowly souls with Your divine knowledge.”
In a serene, resonant, and majestic voice, Varni answered, “Darbar! Bring uncooked rations (sidhu) here; We shall cook and dine right here. We rarely visit bustling settlements; secluded forests and nature are dear to Us.”
Immediately, the Darbar dispatched Jiva Thakkar to fetch the provisions. Varni kindled a fire with dry twigs, prepared baati (roasted wheat dumplings), cooked leafy greens (bhaji), devoutly offered the naivedya to His Shaligram deity, and partook of a portion of the food. He then blessed Darbar Bhagvansinhji and Jiva Thakkar with the holy sanctified remnants (prasadi). Both partook of the prasad and experienced immense spiritual bliss.
Granting them a sacred promise to visit again in the future, Varni resumed His journey and arrived at the village of Diyor. There, seeing village elders sitting at the community square idling away in worldly chatter, He delivered spiritual discourses to elevate them, accepted sidhu from the home of a Bhavsar devotee, and cooked His meal. Thus, traveling from village to village, He continued redeeming and elevating countless souls on their path to ultimate liberation.
