The Brahmin Couple of Vandhiya and Shriji Maharaj

In the land of Kutch, there lies a village named Vandhiya. A deeply devoted Brahmin couple from past births, named Pancho and his wife, resided there. For their past seven lifetimes, both had observed unbroken celibacy (akhand brahmacharya) while remaining continuously absorbed in the worship of the Supreme Lord. Beholding their unwavering dedication and steadfast vow, Shri Hari personally walked to their home to grant them His divine darshan.

While walking toward Vandhiya village, Shri Hari and His attendant were confronted by thieves and robbers along the way. Shri Hari benevolently distributed their packed food—a traditional sweet called sukhadi—to the thieves. After walking some distance further, Shriji Maharaj said to Mulji Brahmachari, “I cannot walk any further; I feel very hungry.” A little ahead on the road, a farmer named Karshandas Patel was traveling with his bullock cart. Seeing them, he respectfully seated Shri Hari in his cart. Mulji Brahmachari said, “O Lord, please grace the cart; I am Your humble servant, so I will walk behind,” and he continued on foot.

Bhaktavatsal Shri Hari urged Mulji Brahmachari two or three times to sit in the cart, but Brahmachariji politely declined and kept walking. Shri Hari then performed a divine play (lila) and mystically increased the weight of the cart, causing the bullocks to slow down under the immense burden. The cart-driver Karshandas tried his best to urge the bullocks forward, but they could barely take a step. Shri Hari smiled gently and said, “Look at that Brahmin walking behind us; he seems to be a sorcerer who knows mystic spells. He must have cast a spell to make your cart so heavy that the bullocks cannot pull it. Now, if we seat that Brahmin in the cart, the cart will surely move smoothly again.”

Karshandas stopped the bullock cart, earnestly pleaded with Mulji Brahmachari, and seated him in the cart. Immediately, Shri Hari lessened the mystical weight, the cart regained its speed, and in a short time they reached Vandhiya village.

By the time they arrived, dusk had fallen. Shri Hari and Mulji Brahmachari took shelter in the village rest house (dharamsala). Karshandas Patel brought some khichdi from the home of the pious Brahmin Pancho—food that had been set aside for Pancho’s children—and offered it to Shriji Maharaj for dinner. Being omniscient (Antaryami), Shriji Maharaj knew this instantly. He walked from the dharamsala straight to the home of the pious Brahmin couple and said, “You sent this khichdi through the farmer, but this food belongs to the destiny and sustenance of your children; we shall not partake of it, so please keep it back.” The Brahmin then lovingly offered fresh sukhadi, which Shriji Maharaj and Mulji Brahmachari joyfully partook of. While Shriji Maharaj was enjoying the sukhadi, the Brahmin couple beheld His extraordinary divine form and attained absolute conviction (pratiti) that He was none other than the manifest Supreme Lord (Pragat Bhagwan). They humbly prayed, “O Lord! Please fulfill our heartfelt wish by gracing our home for a meal tomorrow morning.”

Early the next morning, as Mulji Brahmachari was preparing to resume their journey, Shri Hari said, “Today we shall depart only after having a meal of sugar laddus!”

At daybreak, Pancho Brahmin and his wife lovingly prepared laddus with the utmost purity and devoutly invited Shri Hari and Mulji Brahmachari for the meal. They seated Shriji Maharaj upon a bajoth (raised wooden seat) and began serving Him with boundless love. Gazing upon His enchanting divine countenance, the couple contemplated in their hearts that the intense penance of their past lifetimes had finally borne fruit today. Knowing that they had received the supreme fortune of feeding the manifest Lord, their hearts overflowed with joy. At that sublime moment, the Brahmin woman entered into divine trance (samadhi) and was blessed with direct experiential realization of Shri Hari’s supreme form. Upon emerging from samadhi, she devoutly performed Shri Hari’s pujan and seated Him honorably upon an embellished cot (dholiyo).

Hearing about this miraculous samadhi, the farmer Karshandas also came running, bowed at Shri Hari’s lotus feet, and took refuge in Him as a devoted disciple. That evening, he welcomed Shri Hari to his own home, offered a devotional thaal, and lovingly served Him.
