The Scriptural Debate in Dhrangadhra and the Wisdom of Muktanand Swami

Once, in the princely state of Dhrangadhra, a scholar adhering to the formless concept of God (Nirakarvada) arrived at the royal court of King Ranmalsinhji. Presenting himself in the royal assembly, he began fiercely expounding Nirakarvada and issued a challenge for an open scriptural debate (shastrartha). King Ranmalsinhji could not tolerate such views, yet because the visitor was an erudite Brahmin, royal protocol restrained the king from treating him harshly. He immediately dispatched a trusted royal messenger with an urgent plea to Shri Hari: “O Lord! You are omniscient (antaryami). Please be gracious enough to send an accomplished scholar who can engage in scriptural debate with this Nirakarvadi Brahmin who has arrived in our court.”

Shri Hari commanded Sadguru Purnanand Swami, “Swami! Proceed to Dhrangadhra and firmly establish the divine, personal form of Bhagwan (Saakar-swaroop). We are ever with you.” Purnanand Swami arose at once, gathered his companion sadhus, bowed reverently at the holy feet of Shriji Maharaj and the elder sadhus, and prepared to leave. Shri Hari placed His divine blessing hand upon Swami’s head.

Swami arrived in Dhrangadhra and, the moment he stepped into the royal court, resoundingly proclaimed, “Sahajanand Swami ni Jay!” The king had placed an ornate silver chair in the assembly designated exclusively for whoever would emerge victorious in the debate. Swami walked directly to it and sat upon the chair. Seeing this, the royal usher (chopdar) immediately said, “Swami! This chair is reserved solely for the one who wins today’s scriptural debate.” Swami replied fearlessly, “I am already seated upon it now. If I lose the debate, you may remove me with your own hands and seat me upon the floor—what greater humiliation could there be than that! And if I win, this chair is rightfully mine anyway!”

King Ranmalsinhji was deeply impressed by Swami’s confidence and granted him permission to remain seated. As the king formally permitted the debate to begin, the Nirakarvadi Brahmin began raising intricate and convoluted philosophical arguments. However, remembering Shri Hari, Swami delivered a profound and articulate defense of Sakaravada (God’s divine personal form) in flawless Sanskrit, citing unassailable authorities from the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Gita. After an extensive and scholarly debate, Swami triumphed decisively. The king accorded Swami the highest honors and respect. Swami remained there for a few days to spread Satsang before returning to Gadhpur. When Swami prostrated before Shri Hari and reported the triumphant victory, Shri Hari was immensely pleased; He took off a fragrant rose garland from His own neck, adorned Swami with it, and honored him with sanctified food (prasadi) from His own afternoon meal.

On another occasion, while Shri Hari was residing in Kariyani, He commanded the devout follower Bhoja Charan, “Travel to Dhrangadhra and share the message of Satsang.” Shri Hari specifically instructed Bhoja Charan, “Present the teachings of Satsang in a simple, gentle, and straightforward manner.”

Devotee Bhoja Charan devoutly obeyed the command and proceeded to Dhrangadhra. There, he spoke to the public about righteous conduct (sadachar), the five primary moral vows (panch vartaman), and the divine majesty of the manifest Lord. However, this did not appeal to the town’s rigid Vedantic scholars. They began confronting Bhoja Charan with complex Vedantic subtleties, leaving him perplexed and unable to respond. Feeling disheartened, he immediately returned to Kariyani and narrated the incident to Shri Hari. Shriji Maharaj smiled gently and remarked, “The only one who remains utterly unperturbed when facing such dialectical Vedantins is Sadguru Muktanand Swami.”

With this thought, Maharaj commanded Sadguru Muktanand Swami, “Swami, lead your group of sadhus to Dhrangadhra and enlighten those Vedantins with the true knowledge of Satsang.” Shri Hari specially advised him, “Do not become agitated during questions and answers; respond with tranquility, patience, and complete humility. Remain entirely devoid of ego (nirmani).” Shri Hari also gave strict instructions to the sadhus accompanying Sadguru Muktanand Swami in the mandal, warning them never to lose their temper under any provocation, but to remain obedient to Swami and lovingly inspire seekers toward Satsang.

Placing Shri Hari’s command upon their heads, Sadguru Muktanand Swami and his mandal departed for Dhrangadhra to propagate the divine message of Satsang.
