Sura Khachar’s Amusing Tales and Shrihari’s Divine Laughter

The exalted devotee Sura Khachar was Shriji Maharaj’s intimate companion. Whenever Shrihari assumed a solemn or melancholy human mood, the mere arrival of Sura Bapu dispelled all gloom, filling the environment with divine mirth. Once, Shriji Maharaj requested, “Sura Bapu, share an entertaining story to delight the assembly.” Sura Bapu narrated: “In a village lived an immensely wealthy ascetic named Jalamgar Bava, and his wife’s name was Bhalu. The ascetic had a devoted disciple named Vaikuntha. One day, following a domestic dispute, Bhalu took offense and ran away. Jalamgar searched everywhere but could not find her. Distressed, he asked his disciple, ‘Vaikuntha, what can we do to bring Bhalu back?’ Vaikuntha advised, ‘Master, it will cost twenty-five thousand rupees, but if we organize a grand religious fair and pavilion, Bhalu is sure to attend.’ Jalamgar Bava declared instantly, ‘I sacrifice twenty-five thousand rupees; organize the fair at once!’ Invitations were dispatched far and wide, and monastic troupes arrived playing cymbals and drums. The young disciple eagerly inspected each incoming group; whenever he failed to spot his mother, he returned dejected. The ascetic cried out, ‘Vaikuntha, will our twenty-five thousand rupees go in vain?’ Just then, in the very last group, the boy spotted his mother and hugged her tightly! Jalamgar Bava leaped for joy, exclaiming, ‘Twenty-five thousand rupees were spent, but every single penny was worth it, for my Bhalu has returned!’” Hearing Sura Khachar’s humorous tale of Jalamgar Bava and Bhalu, Shriji Maharaj and the sadhus burst into joyous laughter.

Maharaj then asked, “Sura Bapu, tell us another entertaining tale.” Sura Bapu continued with a second story: “There were two close Kathi friends who lived three miles apart in neighboring villages. Whenever they met, they insisted, ‘Please visit my home.’ One day, one friend visited the other. To honor his guest, the host had his wife prepare sweet kansar (a traditional sweet made of cracked wheat, jaggery, and pure ghee). The two friends sat down to dine. The host repeatedly urged his wife, ‘Serve more kansar to my brother!’ He kept insisting loudly, but the pot of kansar was completely empty; what could she serve? In sheer exasperation, the wife took the empty earthen cooking pot and smashed it right over her husband’s head! Thoroughly embarrassed, both friends retreated outside to the veranda. Shortly afterward, the wife swept up the broken earthenware shards and threw them out. Seeing this, the visiting friend remarked, ‘Brother, your wife is truly commendable! My wife breaks the pot over my head and forces me to clean up the shards myself!’ The host replied proudly, ‘Yes indeed, she breaks the pot often, but she always disposes of the pieces herself.’ Counting their blessings, both friends went to sleep.

Early next morning, the wife woke up, pinned her husband facedown on the floor, and sat upon his back to grind flour on the stone mill. Once she finished and the host walked outside, the visiting friend sighed, ‘Brother, my wife also pins me facedown and doesn’t even let a single grain touch my mouth!’ The host replied proudly, ‘My wife is very generous; even when I am lying underneath, I chew on fallen grains of wheat, and she doesn’t utter a single word of complaint!’ The guest marveled, ‘In that case, your wife is truly wonderful!’” Hearing Sura Khachar’s hilarious folklore, Shriji Maharaj and all the saints laughed to their hearts’ content.
