The Erudition of Dayanand Swami in Jamnagar and Vignanand Swami in Surat
During the divine era of Shriji Maharaj, numerous Nand-sadhus were embodiments of art, literature, poetry, scriptural wisdom, and divine realization. Among them, Sadguru Dayanand Swami, while touring the pilgrimage sites of Saurashtra with his monastic group, arrived in Jamnagar. At that time, Jamnagar was home to many eminent Sanskrit scholars who held prestigious positions in the royal court of the Jam Saheb. On the banks of the city’s lake lay the garden where Shriji Maharaj had previously stayed, and where the sacred banyan tree sanctified by Sadguru Swarupanand Swami stood. Desiring darshan of that consecrated tree, Dayanand Swami visited the garden. During the afternoon, eight to ten prominent Sanskrit scholars were seated beneath the banyan tree, conversing in classical Sanskrit. Assuming the saffron-clad ascetic to be an illiterate wandering monk, they exhibited intellectual disdain and prejudice toward the Swaminarayan fellowship. However, Dayanand Swami was a profound scholar of Sanskrit grammar and Vedanta. Swami politely engaged them in fluent Sanskrit. Surprised, the scholars posed eight to ten deeply abstruse and intricate philosophical questions concerning Vedanta. With effortless mastery, Sadguru Dayanand Swami answered each question quoting precise scriptural authorities from the Upanishads, Brahma Sutras, and Shrimad Bhagavatam. The scholars were astounded. Bowing reverently, they said, “O holy sage! Seeing your detached, ascetic lifestyle, we assumed you might be unlettered in scriptural lore, but you are truly a foremost scholar of Vedanta!” News of Swami’s profound scholarship spread like wildfire across Jamnagar, earning immense respect for the fellowship.
In another episode, Sadguru Vignanand Swami served as the head monk (mahant) of the Rampura temple in Surat for eight years. On one occasion, prominent Jain monks and merchants of Surat visited the temple to meet Swami. Swami hosted them with gracious hospitality and engaged them in uplifting spiritual dialogue. As the Jain monks were preparing to depart, they noticed a small pipal sapling sprouting from the spire (shikhar) of the temple. Seeking to test Swami’s intellect, one of the Jain monks posed a dilemma: “Swami, in your Vaishnav tradition, the pipal tree is revered as the divine embodiment of Lord Vishnu. If you uproot this tender pipal sapling from the spire, you destroy a form of Vishnu and incur the sin of harming a living plant. On the other hand, if you do not remove it, its roots will fracture and destroy your magnificent temple spire! What will you do in such a predicament?” Recognizing the subtle test, Vignanand Swami replied with calm wisdom: “Reverend sir, imagine that an ulcer erupts on the head of one of your revered monks, and worms infest the wound. If you extract the worms, you incur the sin of killing living creatures; but if you chop off the monk’s head to spare the worms, you commit homicide! What would you do in such a situation?” The Jain monk hesitated and admitted, “Of course, one extracts the worms from the ulcer; one would never cut off the monk’s head!” Swami smiled and concluded, “Precisely by that same logic, to preserve the sacred sanctum of the temple, this tiny sapling is gently removed; one does not sacrifice the entire spire for a single sprout!” The senior elderly monk of the Jain delegation was deeply delighted by Swami’s astute and rational explanation, declaring, “Vignanand Muni! Your response is entirely righteous, practical, and scripturally sound!”
