Jamsaheb of Jamnagar and the Royal Reception of Shriji Maharaj
Once, Shriji Maharaj arrived in Jamnagar from Bhuj (Kutch) and halted with His divine assembly of sadhus and devotees at a serene garden on the outskirts of the town. Gajananbhai and Hathibhai, devoted officials of the Jamnagar royal court, conveyed the auspicious news of Maharaj’s arrival to Jamsaheb, the ruler of Jamnagar. Jamsaheb had previously heard exalted praises regarding the divine glory of manifest Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He resolved: “Let us welcome the Lord into our royal court with utmost regal majesty, grand celebration, and festive music!”
With this noble resolve, Jamsaheb commanded his royal administrators: “At four o’clock this afternoon, invite Shri Hari upon the golden howdah (ambadi) of the royal elephant, seat the sadhus and devotees respectfully in horse carriages, and escort them in a grand procession to the palace accompanied by melodious instruments.”
At four in the afternoon, royal emissaries arrived with a grand procession. Hearing the festive sounds, Shri Hari inquired about the cause of the joyful commotion. Shukmuni replied, “O Maharaj, an invitation has arrived for a royal reception at the king’s palace.” Acceding to the earnest prayers of the royal messengers, Shri Hari mounted the golden ambadi atop the royal elephant. Flanked by His assembly of exalted sadhus and devotees, He graced the royal avenues, granting His blissful darshan to the townspeople, before entering the palace.
Jamsaheb welcomed Shri Hari with grand royal protocol (rajopchar pujan) and hosted all the guests with profound reverence. Shri Hari presided gracefully upon an elevated throne, while the royal courtiers, sadhus, and devotees occupied their respective seats. Beholding the enchanting divine countenance of Shri Hari, every mind became tranquil; all present realized the living presence of the manifest Lord and felt spiritually blessed. Shri Hari delivered a profound discourse to Jamsaheb regarding the rarity of human birth, the ultimate spiritual goal of life, and the transient nature of the material world. Shri Hari’s words made an indelible impression upon the heart of Jamsaheb and his courtiers.
However, certain sectarian scholars adhering to the Kaul-mat (heterodox tantric sect) could not endure this spiritual ascendancy. They brazenly sought to initiate an unnecessary dispute with Shri Hari right within the royal court. They insolently challenged Shri Hari: “You propagate the prohibition of intoxicating liquor, meat consumption, animal sacrifice in yagnas, and illicit relationships. In which sacred scripture are such restrictions prescribed?”
Hearing such disrespectful remarks within his royal assembly, Jamsaheb flared up in righteous indignation and intervened: “O Shri Hari! These individuals cannot appreciate the pure current of dharma You have revitalized, and out of narrow self-interest, they oppose the foundational values of Sanatan Hindu culture. In our royal court, scriptural debates can occur only with the King’s explicit permission. Therefore, You need not dignify their questions with a personal reply. However, if any of Your learned sadhus wishes to respond, let the lingering doubts of their minds be thoroughly dispelled.”
Shriji Maharaj signaled the eminent scholar Sadguru Nityanand Swami to address the assembly. With flawless eloquence, Sadguru Nityanand Swami cited decisive verses from the Puranas prohibiting the consumption of meat and references from the Shrimad Bhagavatam categorically forbidding adultery and violence.
Listening to Sadguru Nityanand Swami’s irrefutable scriptural evidence, Jamsaheb was overjoyed. Turning sternly toward the dissenting scholars, he reprimanded them: “Beware! If you wish to dwell in my realm of Jamnagar, you must strictly observe righteousness and moral conduct; otherwise, the karmic consequences of your sinful practices will fall upon me! If you are unwilling to abide by dharma, you are free to leave and reside in another kingdom!”
Thereafter, Jamsaheb worshipped Shriji Maharaj devoutly with fragrant sandalwood paste and attar, received His divine blessings, and bowed reverently at the feet of all the sadhus. With profound devotion, he offered: “If anyone ever causes even the slightest distress to You or Your sadhus within my kingdom, do not hesitate to awaken me, even in the middle of the night!”
Deeply pleased by Jamsaheb’s sincere reverence and righteous character, Shri Hari and the assembly of sadhus bestowed abundant blessings upon him and returned to their lodging.
