નળકાંઠા ના વિસ્તારમા રેથળ કરીને નાનું એવું ગામડું છે. આ રેથળ ગામમાં લાલજીભાઇ કરીને એક વીંહ-એકવીહ વરહના પુરવ જન્મના મુમુક્ષુ રહે.

નળકાંઠા ના વિસ્તારમા રેથળ કરીને નાનું એવું ગામડું છે. આ રેથળ ગામમાં લાલજીભાઇ કરીને એક વીંહ-એકવીહ વરહના પુરવ જન્મના મુમુક્ષુ રહે. નાનપણ થી જ અલગારી આતમો તે વૈરાગી જેવુ જ જીવન જીવે, એમના ગામમા ચોરે ને શીવાલયે પરોક્ષના સાધુ સંતો ના પૃસંગે કરીને એમને નાની વય મા જ ભગવાનને ભેટવાની અદમ્ય ઇચ્છા જાગી તે પોતે ઘરે રહ્યા થકા જ સાધના પૃધાન જીવન જીવવા મંડયા. કોઇ સીધ્ધ મહાત્મા મળે ને ભગવાનનો ભેટો કરાવે એ ઇચ્છા એ પોતે ઘણા દેવસ્થાનો મા દર્શન કરતા કરતા ફર્યા પણ ઓલી કહેવત છે ને તે ઝાંકુ દેખી છાતી ઠરે વાંકા પડ્યા દૂકાળ એમ કોઇ એવા સમર્થ સંત ન મળ્યા કે જે પૃગટ ભગવાનનો ભેટો કરાવે.
અંતે ફરતા ફરતા ધોળકા થી ચાર ગાઉ દુર આવેલા ગોધનેશ્વર મહાદેવ ના મંદિરમા ગયા ને દર્શન કર્યા. મહાદેવ ના દર્શન કરીને પોતે વિચાર કર્યો કે આહી એકાંત મા રહીને ગોધનેશ્વર મહાદેવ ની કઠીન તપશ્ચર્યા કરીને પૃસન્ન કંરુ. પોતે એક વખત અલ્પ આહાર કરે, બબ્બે-ચાર દિવસ ના એકધારા ઉપવાસ કરે, દિવસ મા એક જ વખત દૂધ કે ફળાહાર કરે, ક્યારેક ક્યારેક તો વૃક્ષના પાંદડાને પાણી થી દિવસ ગુજારે ને બાકી નો સમય પોતે મહાદેવદાદા ની સાધના મા જ સમય વ્યતિત કરવા લાગ્યા. આમ લાંબા સમયની તપશ્ચર્યા પછી એકદિવસ ગોધનેશ્વર મહાદેવ પૃસન્ન થયા ને બોલ્યા કે લાલજી તમે.. પૃગટ ભગવાનના દર્શન ઇચ્છા સારુ જે સાધના કરો છો એનાથી હુ પૃસન્ન થયો છુ તમારી ઇચ્છા અનુસાર ભગવાન પૃગટ હાલ સ્વામિનારાયણ નામે વિચરણ કરે છે જે આજ થી થોડે દિવસ પછી તમારા ગામની બાજુમાં મછીયાવ ગામ છે ત્યાં પધારશે. તમે એ સલૂણી છબીના દર્શન કરજો તમારી તમામ મનોકામના પરિપૂર્ણ કરશે. આમ ભગવાન ભોળાનાથ ના દર્શન થતા જ લાલજીભાઇ તો ખુશ ખુશ થય ગયા ને મહાદેવજી ને પગે લાગીને આશીર્વાદ લઇને પોતાને ગામ રેથળ પધાર્યા.
પછે તો દિવસ રાત્ય બસ એક જ રટણ કે ક્યારે મારો વાલો મને દર્શન દેવા મછીયાવ પધારે, મનમા વીચારે કે રખે ને પૃભુ પધારે ને હુ દર્શન ચુકી જાઉં એ વાતે મછીયાવના રસ્તે આવતા જાતા બધાય ને લગભગ રોજ પોતે ઉત્કંઠાથી પુછયા જ કરે. એકદિવસ એ સોનાનો સુરજ ઉગયો, સર્વેશ્વર શ્રીહરિ માણકીએ અસવાર થતા થકા મોટા મોટા નંદસંતો ના મંડળ સાથે ફઇબા ના મછીયાવ પધાર્યા. લાલજીભાઇ તો હોંશે હોંશે દર્શન કરવા પોગી ગયા, જઇને પોતે સભામા આગળ જઇ ને શ્રીહરિના ચરણે ધબોધબ દંડવત કરવા મંડયા. પોતાનો આજ મનનો સંકલ્પ પુરો થયો તે હરખના આસુંડે શ્રીહરિના ચરણો ભીંજવી દીધા. શ્રીહરિએ ઉભા કર્યા બાથ મા ઘાલી ને ભેટ્યા ને સભામા બેસાડ્યા. શ્રીહરિએ લાલજીભાઇ ના ગોધનેશ્વર મહાદેવની તપશ્ચર્યા ને દર્શન ની વિગતે વાત કહી સંભળાવી. લાલજીભગતને મનમા બધાય સંકલ્પો ટળી ગયા ને અપાર શાંતિ થઇ. લાલજીભાઇ બોલ્યા કે હે પૃભુ..! અનંત જન્મોથી આ જીવ આ ભવાટવી મા ભટકી ભટકી ને થાક્યો છે, આજ તમારો પૃત્યક્ષ દરશ-સ્પર્શ નો યોગ થયો છે હવે મને ક્યાંય જાવુ નથી. મને પૃભુ તમારી સેવા મા રાખો ને સાધુ કરો.
શ્રીહરિ એ થોડા દિવસ પોતાની સાથે રાખ્યા ને પછે એકદિવસ ભગવી સાધુ દિક્ષા આપી ને ઉત્તમાનંદ સ્વામી નામ પાડ્યું ને પોતાની સેવા મા રાખ્યા.
આમ રેથળ ગામના એકવીંહ વરહના લાલજીભાઇ સાધુ બનીને પોતે આજીવન શ્રીહરિના દાસ બની રહ્યા.

रेथळ के लालजीभाई (उत्तमानंद स्वामी) और महादेव का आशीर्वाद
नलकांठा क्षेत्र में रेथळ नाम का एक छोटा-सा गाँव है। इस रेथळ गाँव में लालजीभाई नाम के बीस-इक्कीस वर्ष के पूर्वजन्म के संस्कारवान मुमुक्षु रहते थे। बाल्यावस्था से ही उनका मन विरक्त था और वे किसी वैरागी की भाँति सादगीपूर्ण जीवन जीते थे। गाँव के चौपाल और शिवालय में आने वाले परोक्ष के साधु-संतों के सत्संग से उनकी छोटी आयु में ही साक्षात परमात्मा से मिलने की अदम्य अभिलाषा जागृत हो गई। वे घर में रहते हुए भी एक तपस्वी का साधन-प्रधान जीवन जीने लगे। किसी सिद्ध महात्मा के दर्शन हों जो उन्हें प्रकट परमात्मा से मिला दें—इस उत्कंठा से वे अनेक तीर्थों और देवस्थानों में दर्शन करते हुए घूमे। किंतु उन्हें कोई ऐसा समर्थ संत न मिला जो प्रत्यक्ष परमात्मा की पहचान करवा सके।
अंततः भ्रमण करते हुए वे धोलका से चार कोस दूर स्थित गोधनेश्वर महादेव के मंदिर पहुँचे और महादेव के दर्शन किए। शिवजी के दर्शन कर उन्होंने विचार किया कि यहाँ एकांत में रहकर गोधनेश्वर महादेव की कठोर तपस्या करूँगा और उन्हें प्रसन्न करूँगा। वे अल्पाहार करने लगे, कभी-कभी दो-दो चार-चार दिन के निर्जल उपवास करते, दिन में केवल एक बार थोड़ा दूध या फलाहार लेते, और कभी-कभी तो केवल वृक्षों के पत्तों और जल पर ही दिन बिताते। शेष सारा समय वे महादेव की आराधना और ध्यान में व्यतीत करते।
इस प्रकार लंबी कठोर तपस्या के पश्चात एक दिन गोधनेश्वर महादेव साक्षात प्रकट होकर प्रसन्नतापूर्वक बोले, “हे लालजी! प्रकट परमात्मा के दर्शन की अभिलाषा से की गई तुम्हारी इस अनन्य साधना से मैं अति प्रसन्न हूँ। तुम्हारी मनोकामना के अनुसार स्वयं पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान इस समय ‘स्वामिनारायण’ नाम धारण कर भूतल पर विचरण कर रहे हैं। आज से कुछ ही दिनों पश्चात वे तुम्हारे गाँव के निकट स्थित मच्छियाव गाँव पधारेंगे। तुम उस सुंदर दिव्य स्वरूप के दर्शन करना, वे तुम्हारी समस्त मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण करेंगे।”
भगवान भोलेनाथ के प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन और मधुर वचनों से लालजीभाई का हृदय आनंद से गद्गद हो गया। वे महादेवजी के चरणों में वंदन कर, आशीर्वाद लेकर अपने गाँव रेथळ लौट आए।
इसके बाद तो उनके हृदय में दिन-रात बस एक ही रटन लगी रहती कि कब मेरे प्यारे प्रभु मच्छियाव पधारेंगे और मुझे दर्शन देंगे! मन में निरंतर यह चिंता रहती कि कहीं प्रभु आएँ और मैं उनके दर्शन से वंचित न रह जाऊँ। इसलिए मच्छियाव के मार्ग पर आने-जाने वाले प्रत्येक व्यक्ति से वे प्रतिदिन बड़ी उत्कंठा से पूछते रहते थे।
अंततः वह स्वर्णिम दिन आ ही गया! सर्वेश्वर श्रीहरि मानकी घोड़ी पर सवार होकर बड़े-बड़े नंद-संतों के विशाल मंडल के साथ फईबा के गाँव मच्छियाव पधारे। यह शुभ समाचार सुनते ही लालजीभाई परम उमंग के साथ दर्शन करने पहुँचे। सभा में आगे बढ़कर वे श्रीहरि के श्रीचरणों में साष्टांग दंडवत प्रणाम करने लगे। आज उनके जीवन का परम मनोरथ सिद्ध हुआ था, अतः उनके हर्ष के आंसुओं ने श्रीहरि के चरणकमलों को भिगो दिया। कृपालु श्रीहरि ने उन्हें तुरंत उठाकर अपनी दोनों भुजाओं में भरकर प्रेम से आलिंगन दिया और अपने निकट सभा में बिठाया। श्रीहरि ने स्वयं सभा के समक्ष लालजीभाई की गोधनेश्वर महादेव की कठोर तपस्या और शिवजी के दर्शन का संपूर्ण वृत्तांत विस्तार से कह सुनाया।
यह सुनकर लालजीभगत के मन के समस्त संशय मिट गए और उन्हें अपार परम शांति की अनुभूति हुई। लालजीभाई हाथ जोड़कर प्रार्थना करने लगे, “हे प्रभु! अनंत जन्मों से यह जीव इस संसार रूपी गहन वन में भटक-भटक कर थक चुका है। आज आपके प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन और पावन स्पर्श का परम सौभाग्य प्राप्त हुआ है, अब मुझे कहीं नहीं जाना है। हे प्रभु! मुझे अपनी ही सेवा में रखिए और मुझे साधु दीक्षा प्रदान कीजिए।”
श्रीहरि ने कुछ दिनों तक उन्हें अपने साथ रखा और फिर एक दिन भगवी साधु दीक्षा देकर उनका नाम ‘उत्तमानंद स्वामी’ रखा तथा उन्हें अपनी दिव्य सेवा में रख लिया।
इस प्रकार रेथळ गाँव के इक्कीस वर्षीय युवा लालजीभाई साधु बनकर जीवनभर श्रीहरि के अनन्य दास बने रहे।

Laljibhai of Rethal (Uttamanand Swami) and the Blessings of Mahadev
In the Nalkantha region lies a small, quiet village named Rethal. In this village lived a twenty-one-year-old youth named Laljibhai, who was an elevated spiritual seeker (mumukshu) blessed with noble impressions from past lives. From early childhood, he possessed an innate detachment from worldly attractions and lived like an ascetic (vairagi). Through the company of wandering sadhus and ascetics visiting the village square and Shiva temple, an intense yearning to meet the Supreme Lord was ignited within him at an early age. Even while dwelling at home, he led a life wholly centered on spiritual discipline and devotion. Desiring to encounter an enlightened master who could lead him to the manifest Lord, he wandered from shrine to shrine. Yet, as the traditional adage goes, he could find no spiritually capable saint who could introduce him to manifest God.
Eventually, in the course of his spiritual quest, he arrived at the ancient temple of Godhaneshwar Mahadev, situated about four gaus from Dholka, and had darshan of Lord Shiva. Gazing upon Mahadev, he resolved to reside in solitude there and perform severe austerities (tapashcharya) to propitiate Godhaneshwar Mahadev. He drastically curtailed his diet, observed continuous fasts lasting two to four days, partook of only milk or fruit once a day, and sometimes sustained himself solely on tree leaves and water, dedicating all remaining hours to deep meditation and worship of Mahadev.
Following an extended period of arduous penance, Godhaneshwar Mahadev was deeply pleased and manifested before him, proclaiming: “O Lalji! I am immensely pleased with the austere sadhana you have undertaken out of your intense yearning to behold manifest God. In fulfillment of your heartfelt desire, the Supreme Lord Himself has manifested upon this earth and is currently gracing the land under the name Bhagwan Swaminarayan. A few days from now, He will grace the village of Machhiav, which borders your own village. Go and behold that enchanting, divine form; He shall fulfill all your cherished desires.”
Beholding Lord Bholenath in person and hearing these divine words, Laljibhai was filled with supreme joy. Bowing reverently at Mahadevji’s feet and receiving his blessings, he returned to his village of Rethal.
Thereafter, day and night, his heart echoed with only one longing: “When will my beloved Lord arrive in Machhiav to grant me darshan?” Troubled by the fear that the Lord might arrive and he might miss the divine opportunity, he would eagerly inquire from travelers commuting along the road to Machhiav each day.
Finally, that auspicious golden morning dawned! The Supreme Lord Shri Hari, mounted upon His divine mare Manki, arrived at Machhiav (the village of Faiba) accompanied by an illustrious assembly of exalted Nand-saints. Filled with overflowing love and eagerness, Laljibhai rushed there to have darshan. Advancing to the forefront of the divine assembly, he fell prostrate in repeated dandavats at Shri Hari’s lotus feet. As the lifelong yearning of his soul was fulfilled this day, torrents of ecstatic tears flowed from his eyes, bathing Shri Hari’s sacred feet. Shri Hari lovingly raised him up, embraced him tightly with open arms, and seated him warmly within the assembly. Shri Hari Himself then narrated to the entire congregation the full account of Laljibhai’s intense penance at Godhaneshwar Mahadev and the divine boon granted by Lord Shiva.
Hearing this, all worldly attachments and doubts vanished from Laljibhai’s heart, bestowing upon him transcendental peace. Laljibhai prayed with folded hands, “O Lord! For countless births, this jiva has wandered weary and lost in the dense forest of mundane transmigration (bhavatavi). Today, I have attained the blessed fortune of Your direct darshan and holy touch. Now I have no desire to go anywhere else. O Lord, keep me forever in Your holy service and initiate me as a sadhu.”
Shri Hari kept him in His holy company for several days and subsequently initiated him into the sadhu fold with saffron robes, bestowing upon him the name ‘Uttamanand Swami’, and kept him in His personal divine service.
Thus, twenty-one-year-old Laljibhai of Rethal was initiated as a sadhu, remaining an unflinching, devoted servant of Shri Hari throughout his life.
