Jodha Bhagat’s Goats and the Salvation of the Hare and the Blackbuck
In the year Samvat 1881, Shriji Maharaj was traveling from Vadtal to Gadhada with a large congregation of saints, devotees, and Kathi chieftains. On the journey, to provide milk for the young foals accompanying the Darbars’ mares, Shrihari decided to purchase milk goats from a local shepherd who was grazing a flock nearby. Shriji Maharaj approached the shepherd named Gokali and asked, “Brother! We need a few good milk-giving goats for our young foals; will you sell us some?” The shepherd replied, “You need not choose them Yourself; send anyone from Your group to pick whichever goats they like.” After agreeing on the price, Maharaj smiled playfully and turned to Jodha Bhagat, saying, “Bhagat, go and select two fine goats from the herd.” Jodha Bhagat said, “Very well, Maharaj! I shall find them immediately.” Jodha Bhagat swiftly entered the large flock, identified two of the finest goats, held them by their ears, and brought them straight before Maharaj and the shepherd. Observing the choice, the shepherd was stunned and said to Maharaj, “This man, armed with a gold-hilted sword and looking like a royal guard, surely belongs to our shepherd caste! Without being one of us, no one could possess such keen discernment; otherwise, finding the best goats from such a massive flock would be impossible.” Maharaj asked amusedly, “Gokali, is your community truly so clever?” The shepherd boasted, “Even if a hundred Nagar Brahmins put their heads together, they could not match the practical wisdom inherent in our shepherd community!” Shrihari turned to the saints and observed, “See how deeply the pride of one’s caste clings to the soul across countless lifetimes!”
As the procession continued onward, a dog accompanying the group chased and caught a wild hare. Devotees rushed to chase the dog away, but the hare had been critically wounded and was gasping for its final breaths. Seeing this, compassionate Shrihari immediately approached the dying creature. In its final moments, Maharaj personally administered the sacred vows (vartaman) unto the hare and poured sanctified water into its mouth, bestowing supreme liberation upon its soul. Witnessing this, the Kathi Darbars marveled, “O Maharaj! Just like grandfather Bhishma, this hare has discarded its mortal frame while gazing directly upon Your divine countenance; its spiritual merit must be limitless!” As noon approached, Shrihari asked the party to look for a shady tree to rest and take lunch. An inviting mango tree appeared along the road, but someone had defiled the ground beneath it. Consequently, the party proceeded further to rest beneath another tree. Shriji Maharaj revealed the inner spiritual mystery: “That dog was indeed a true friend of the hare, for it brought about its death at this auspicious moment, ensuring its ultimate liberation through Our hands! Conversely, the person who defiled the ground beneath the mango tree must have been an enemy of that tree from a past birth; because of that defilement, We did not sit beneath it, otherwise that tree too would have attained divine liberation by Our presence!”
Later, as Maharaj rode forward with the Kathi horsemen, a herd of deer crossed their path from the left. Noting traditional omens, the Darbars remarked, “O Maharaj! Deer crossing from the left is considered an inauspicious sign.” Shrihari spurred His mare to guide the deer to cross to the right, causing the herd to scatter. Maharaj pursued a magnificent blackbuck (kaliyar). After running for a while, the blackbuck stopped, thoroughly calm and exhausted. Shriji Maharaj stood directly in front of it while the Kathi riders formed a circle around them. Maharaj rinsed His mouth with holy water and poured it over the blackbuck’s forehead; the animal gently licked the sanctified water. Even when Shriji Maharaj touched its sharp horns with His holy lotus feet, the blackbuck remained motionless with its head bowed in utter surrender. The astonished Darbars exclaimed, “O Maharaj! This creature surely appears to be a great yogi in disguise!” Shrihari affirmed, “As long as this blackbuck lives, it will constantly remember Us, and its supreme spiritual liberation is assured.”
