Prabhanand Swami and the Supremacy of Shriji Maharaj

Once, a merchant (vanik) from the port of Diu set sail with a ship loaded with merchandise for trade. In the middle of the voyage, his vessel was caught in a perilous sea storm. In that moment of distress, the merchant fervently prayed from the depths of his heart to Lord Dwarikadhish, “O Lord! If I am delivered safely from this tempest, I shall offer half of all this wealth to You.” Lord Dwarikadhish heard his earnest plea, and the ship reached the shore safe and sound. To fulfill his pledge of offering half his wealth to the Lord, the merchant set out on a pilgrimage to Dwarika. On the way, he halted for a night’s stay at a traveler’s inn (dharmashala) in a village. There, he received news that the eminent saint, Sadguru Ramanand Swami, was gracing the village with his divine presence. Being an evolved spiritual seeker from past lives, the merchant thought, “If I have the darshan of such a holy saint, my pilgrimage will be truly fruitful.” With this thought, he went for Swami’s darshan. Being omniscient (antaryami), Sadguru Ramanand Swami narrated all the details of the merchant’s ordeal and his secret pledge verbatim. Experiencing Swami’s divine knowledge, profound devotion towards the Guru blossomed in the merchant’s heart. He stayed with Swami, surrendered the promised half of his wealth directly at Swami’s holy feet, and took refuge as his disciple. After spending some time in Swami’s divine company, he returned home.

With the passage of time, he received news that his spiritual master, Sadguru Ramanand Swami, had departed for Akshardham, and that a young Varni (Sahajanand Swami) had succeeded him. The merchant felt a strong desire to have His darshan and to test His divine capability. He thought to himself, “My Guru Sadguru Ramanand Swami was immensely powerful, but I shall surrender only after testing His successor.” Carrying various specific thoughts and silent tests in his mind, he arrived before Shriji Maharaj, bowed at His feet, and sat down in the assembly. Shriji Maharaj immediately turned to a five-year-old child present in the assembly and said, “This merchant has arrived carrying certain thoughts in his mind; narrate them clearly to everyone in this assembly!” Through that young child, Shriji Maharaj revealed all the secret thoughts and tests harbored by the merchant in minute detail before the entire gathering.

The merchant was left utterly spellbound and speechless! He contemplated in awe, “If He can inspire such immense divine power into a mere five-year-old child so that the child can read the deepest secrets of my mind, how extraordinarily exalted must His five hundred Paramhansas be! And how infinitely supreme must He Himself be!” Filled with overwhelming reverence and spiritual conviction, he stood up and began offering fervent prostrations (dandvats) repeatedly at Shri Hari’s lotus feet. The merchant resolved to remain with Maharaj and the holy saints, selflessly serving them in every large and humble task for three to four years.

One day, he humbly prayed at Shri Hari’s feet, “O Lord! Please initiate me as Your sadhu. I no longer wish to return home; my only yearning now is to remain forever in the service of You and this divine assembly of liberated souls (mukta-sabha).” Pleased with his steadfast devotion, Shriji Maharaj granted him sadhu initiation (diksha) and named him ‘Prabhanand Swami’. He remained an exemplary, humble servant of Shri Hari throughout his life.
