Brahmanand Swami’s Raga Malhar and the Rain

Once, Shri Hari was seated on a cot in the veranda facing the west door of Laduba’s quarters. Devotees such as Sura Khachar, Somla Khachar, and Mulji Sheth were seated reverently before Him. At that moment, a devotee arrived, bowed at Shri Hari’s lotus feet, and pleaded, “O Maharaj! In the fields, the crops are withering, and fodder for the cattle has completely run out. Please shower Your grace and bring forth the rains!” Shri Hari replied, “In earlier times, when Narsinh Mehta sang Raga Malhar, the rains fell. Similarly, our Brahmanand Swami is just like Narsinh Mehta. If he sings Raga Malhar, the clouds will surely pour! Someone go and invite Brahmanand Swami.”

Immediately, an attendant (parshad) went and brought Brahmanand Swami. Sadguru Brahmanand Swami tuned his sarangi and, accompanied by Sadguru Premanand Swami, began singing Raga Malhar. As soon as the first verse (pad) was sung, dense dark clouds gathered across the sky, and peacocks stretched their necks and began to call out in joy. By the singing of the second verse, flashes of lightning streaked across the firmament and thunder roared vigorously. And just as the third verse commenced, the skies opened up in an incessant deluge, as if all twelve clouds of heaven had burst forth together! The rain poured so heavily that the eaves and courtyards of the Darbargadh could hardly contain the overflowing waters. Farmers working in the fields hurried back toward the village, and herds of cattle grazing in the pastures returned home. Shri Hari’s boundless grace spread everywhere, and an atmosphere of sheer joy and relief enveloped the entire community.

As Sadguru Brahmanand Swami completed singing the fourth verse, Shri Hari arose from the cot on the veranda with boundless delight. Removing the fragrant garland of fresh roses from His own neck, He lovingly placed it around Swami’s neck. As Swami bowed in deep reverence at Shri Hari’s holy feet, Maharaj showered him with blessings. Clapping His hands with joy, Shri Hari addressed the gathered farmers and devotees from Gadhpur and surrounding regions, “Look, how exalted our Brahmanand Swami is! He caused the rains to pour, and Varundev (the deity of waters) himself arrived instantly to have Swami’s darshan and to listen to the melody of his Raga Malhar!”
