Muktanand Swami’s Mala Rule and Shriji Maharaj
On the auspicious day of Devshayani Ekadashi in Gadhpur, Shri Hari was seated majestically presiding over an assembly. Shri Hari instructed all the assembled sadhus and devotees to take up special Chaturmas vows (spiritual disciplines to be observed until Prabodhini Ekadashi). Each devotee and saint stepped forward, offered prostrations at Shri Hari’s lotus feet, declared their chosen vows, and received His divine darshan.
However, Sadguru Muktanand Swami did not rise from the assembly. Noticing this, Maharaj asked, “Swami, are you not going to take up a vow?” Sadguru Muktanand Swami, affectionately revered as the caring mother of the entire Satsang fellowship, folded his hands and prayed, “O Maharaj! I chant 108 malas every day, and in that alone I find scarcely any spare time; hence, I do not wish to undertake any new vow.” Shri Hari, who knows the innermost thoughts of all hearts, feigned ignorance and asked, “Swami, how exactly do you chant your mala?” Swami replied, “O Maharaj! I chant the rosary by meditating individually and deeply upon every single limb and divine feature of Your holy murti! Moreover, if any stray worldly thought crosses my mind during a mala, I repeat that entire mala anew!”
Maharaj remarked, “Swami, please describe that detailed method to this assembly as well, so that if other saints and devotees wish to take a sublime vow like yours, they will find guidance!” Swami humbly replied, “As You wish, Maharaj!”

Upon hearing this extraordinary and profoundly meditative discipline of chanting 108 malas, Shriji Maharaj was overwhelmed with divine joy. Embracing Muktanand Swami warmly, Maharaj proclaimed, “Muktanand Swami, of all vows, yours is the most sublime! Everyone should learn from Swami how to chant the mala with such undivided meditation. And today, We too take a vow: for all four and a half months of Chaturmas, We shall seat Muktanand Swami and Dada Khachar in our bullock carriage (sigram) every day and take them personally to bathe in the river Ghela!”
- Shri Sahajanand Swami Charitra…
Chant with deep devotion the ceaseless rosary (japamala)...
(Raag: Garbi, Pad 1)
Chant with deep devotion the ceaseless rosary (japamala);
This mala dispels all wavering tendencies and distractions of the mind. [Refrain]
Enshrine each and every divine limb of Shri Hari within your heart,
And chant the holy name of Swaminarayan. [1]
Chant meditating upon His two bliss-bestowing lotus feet,
Remembering the divine vertical lines (Urdhvarekha) and auspicious marks. [2]
Know ten malas for the ten toes of both feet,
And count two malas for the arches and balls of both feet. [3]
Graceful are the two heels and the two ankles;
Chanting four malas for them enchants the heart of the devotee. [4]
Bowing to both calves and both knees,
The saints chant four malas and experience boundless joy. [5]
Turn two malas for both thighs,
And gaze with immense love upon the circular lotus navel. [6]
Gazing upon the navel, the abdomen, and both breasts,
The devotee chants four malas, utterly captivated in divine love. [7]
Upon the two bliss-bestowing, graceful arms of Shri Hari,
The devotee turns the rosary, surrendering everything in loving devotion. [8]
Ten malas are sung for the ten fingers of His hands;
Beholding them fills the devotee's heart with celestial delight. [9]
Turn two malas for the neck and the charming chin,
Gazing enthusiastically upon His radiant lotus-like countenance. [10]
Gazing upon the divine mouth, nose, and pair of eyes,
Turn four malas while beholding these four divine features. [11]
In the ears of our beloved Lord shine dazzling earrings;
Turning a mala for both ears delights the servant's soul. [12]
Beholding His twin eyebrows, even Time (Kaal) trembles in awe;
Gazing upon them with reverence, the devotee chants two malas. [13]
His radiant forehead adorned with the auspicious Tilak appears immensely lovely;
Filled with pure affection, the servant chants one mala. [14]
Upon His head rests an enchanting turban graced with fragrant tassels (tora);
Turning the mala, the devotee lovingly beholds the Lord of Vaikunth. [15]
In this manner, a rosary of fifty malas is completed;
Chanting it completely destroys the cycle of birth and death. [16]
Bhagwan Swaminarayan Himself bestowed this divine rosary,
And with supreme love, Muktanand Swami enshrined it forever in his heart. [17]
