The Faith of Tatvanand Swami and the Renunciation of Sadanand Swami

During the divine era of Shriji Maharaj, there were many Nand-saints who hailed from northern India (Hindustan). Among them were six wandering ascetics who were previously worshippers of Lord Narasimha. They came to Gadhpur together, took initiation (diksha) at the very same time, and became holy sadhus: Tatvanand Swami, Nrusinhanand Swami, Shripat Devanand Swami, Sadanand Swami, and others.

Sadguru Tatvanand Swami possessed such unflinching and resolute conviction (nishtha) in the supreme divine form of Shri Hari that when Shriji Maharaj appointed four senior Sadgurus in the village of Adaraj, worshipped them the following day, and instructed everyone to abide by their guidance, He tested the saints by asking: “From today, you should meditate upon these four Sadgurus as well.” Hearing this, Sadguru Tatvanand Swami immediately rose, walked up to Shriji Maharaj, and proclaimed in his rustic Hindustani dialect: “O slender Sahajanand! Whatever else You ask us to do, we shall gladly do. If You command us, we will survive by merely consuming air, but our meditation shall be focused on You alone!” Witnessing his pure and unwavering faith, Shriji Maharaj was immensely pleased and embraced him warmly.

Among them, Sadanand Swami, known as ‘Patiyawala’, was the living embodiment of asceticism and detachment (vairagya). He always lived in the orchards alongside Prem-murti Sachchidanand Swami, constantly absorbed in meditation. To prevent jackals from disturbing their nightly meditation in the orchard, he had even placed the howling jackals into deep divine trance (samadhi)! He utilized a single earthen pot-shard (patiyu) for all his daily needs: collecting alms (bhiksha), bathing in the river Ghela, washing, cooking khichdi, and resting his head upon it as a pillow while sleeping. Whenever he visited the Darbargadh for Maharaj’s darshan, he would bathe in the Ghela and bring water in his earthen vessel. Arriving before Shriji Maharaj, he would say: “Sahajanand Swami, dip Your holy toe into this water! You will lose nothing, but my highest spiritual goal will be fulfilled!” Delighted by the innocent devotion of this detached recluse, Shri Hari would dip His toe into the water. Sadanand Swami would drink as much of that sanctified water (charanamrut) as he could, pour the rest over his head, and joyfully exclaim: “I have been blessed and my spiritual task is accomplished!”

Once, while traveling from village to village, Sadanand Swami arrived in the village of Bavali. A spiteful ascetic named Bhandas Bava lived there. Bhandas refused to let the holy sadhus enter the village, hurled vile abuses at them, and drove them away from the outskirts. Although Swami had been fasting for two to three consecutive days, he uttered not a single word in retaliation and quietly departed, hungry and thirsty. Still unsatisfied, Bhandas grabbed a heavy stick made of sheesham (rosewood) and brutally beat Sadanand Swami. Hearing the commotion, several villagers intervened, rescued Swami, reprimanded Bhandas, and drove him away. When the villagers saw the deep welts and severe bruises on Swami’s back, they asked with deep concern, “How badly are you hurt?” The divine sage Sadanand Swami serenely replied: “All these blows have merely struck my physical body, and this body of clay is of no real consequence; but alas, my brother ascetic’s sheesham stick has broken!” Witnessing such astonishing forbearance and divine compassion even after suffering brutal assault, the villagers were overwhelmed with profound reverence. The malicious Bhandas fled, while the sadhus continued on their journey, hungry and thirsty. Shortly thereafter, the grave spiritual offense of persecuting an innocent, enlightened saint bore its grim consequences: within just three months, nine members of Bhandas Bava’s household met an untimely death.
