The Unflinching Honesty (Asteya) of Mandanbhakt and Kanabhakt

In the Satsang fellowship, the episode of Ghela Bhakt—a humble Koli devotee of Loya—and his wife covering a fallen gold ornament with dust so as not to be tempted during a harsh famine year is renowned worldwide.

In a similar vein of pristine integrity, holy sadhus once graced the home of Mandan Bhakt in the village of Langala. At noon, the sadhus offered thaal to Thakorji and took their meals. As the sadhus needed to travel to a neighboring village, Mandan Bhakt harnessed his bullock cart and prepared to escort them. Along the way, two bundles of dried grass fell from a cart moving ahead. Seeing this, the sadhus asked Mandan Bhakt to halt his cart and placed the bundles onto it. Mandan Bhakt immediately asked the sadhus, “What will you do with these bundles?” The sadhus replied, “Ahead on our way lies the Kalubhar River. While we bathe there, this grass will serve as fodder for the bullocks.” Hearing this, Mandan Bhakt instantly took the bundles down from the cart and placed them back on the road. He said, “I have cash with me; I will spend my own money to purchase fodder from the village and feed my bullocks. My Guru, Anandānand Brahmachāri, initiated me into the moral vows (vartaman), and in my entire life, I have never taken even a blade of grass belonging to someone else without their permission!” The sadhus were deeply overjoyed witnessing Mandan Bhakt’s immaculate adherence to dharma and his unshakeable resolve to honor the words of his Guru.

Similarly, in the village of Piperla, Kana Bhakt was working in his field. When noon arrived, his wife carried their little son on her hip and set out toward the farm to bring his lunch. While walking along the field path, the young boy threw a tantrum, demanding, “Break a sorghum stalk for me!” Walking along the path, Kana Bhakt’s wife broke a stalk of jowar from the edge of someone else’s field. Kana Bhakt, who was plowing the soil, shaded his eyes with his hand and watched this from afar. As soon as his wife reached the field, he questioned her sternly, “Why did you bend down while walking along the path?” His wife replied, “Our child was crying obstinately, so I plucked a stalk of jowar for him.” Kana Bhakt was instantly filled with righteous indignation and said, “It is the sacred commandment (aagna) of our Ishtadev that one must never take fruits, flowers, or anything whatsoever while walking on a path or anywhere else without asking the owner! You have transgressed that divine commandment. Until you atone for this transgression by observing a fast (prayashchit), even taking food and water from your hands is forbidden to me!”
