The Devotees of Bamanva and the Salvation of a Brahmaraakshas
Shri Hari was traveling through the villages of Gujarat accompanied by His holy saints. One evening, wandering from place to place, He arrived at the village of Bamanva. At dusk, Maharaj took His meal (thaal), and the saints sat in rows (pankti) to dine. As preparations to serve sheero, rice, and other foods were underway, Shriji Maharaj went into the village to a Patidar woman who was milking her three or four buffaloes. Approaching her, Maharaj said, “Today in your village, We, the manifest Supreme Lord, have arrived along with so many great liberated saints. Offer the fresh milk of your buffaloes to them! Such a divine opportunity is exceedingly rare to obtain again in this era and in this human birth.”
The woman was evidently an evolved spiritual seeker (mumukshu) from past births, for she immediately recognized Shri Hari. She devoutly said, “O Bapji! In the Krishna incarnation, You asked for buttermilk and butter and enjoyed it; today You have bestowed that same blessing upon me unasked! Surely the virtues of many of my past lifetimes have borne fruit today. Please take all these pails filled with the fresh milk of all four buffaloes. First, You drink the milk, and then graciously serve it with Your own holy hands to the assembly of sadhus.” Right before the devotee, Maharaj strained the milk, filled a brass bowl, and drank it. He then served all the remaining milk to the lines of saints with immense love and warm persistence.
Maharaj then asked her, “Did you save any milk for dinner for your children and husband?” The woman replied with deep faith, “O Bhagwan! The children of us Kanbi farmers are hardy sons of the soil; they can easily have dinner with buttermilk for a day, what does it matter? When could we ever hope to welcome such holy saints and You, Purushottam Narayan in human form, at our humble doorstep! Since You and the holy saints have dined today, please come to take all of us, and these buffaloes as well, at our final moments, and grant us supreme liberation (kalyan).” Shri Hari was immensely pleased upon witnessing her profound spiritual understanding and devotion.
Moving onward through various villages, Shriji Maharaj arrived in Ahmedabad and presided over an assembly. At that time, Dandi Devanand Swami arrived bringing a Brahmin named Ishvar from Mahudha village. Swami had Ishvar take darshan of Shriji Maharaj and made him sit nearby. Swami prayed, “O Maharaj! You are omniscient (antaryami) and know everything, but a Brahmaraakshas (ghost of an attached Brahmin) has possessed Ishvar; please help him.” As soon as Shriji Maharaj cast His compassionate glance upon Ishvar, the Brahmaraakshas residing within his body cried out desperately, “I am burning! I am burning!”
Shriji Maharaj commanded, “Why are you troubling our devotee? Leave him at once!” The Brahmaraakshas spoke through Ishvar’s body, “Maharaj, I am his paternal uncle. In our field, there was a rayan tree to which I was deeply attached. Due to that attachment, I became a ghost (pret) after death. Now, whoever cuts down that tree, I kill them. Ishvar knew this, yet he chopped down the rayan tree, which is why I possessed him. I would have killed him, but because he is Your devotee, I come to the assemblies whenever holy sadhus and saints gather, seeking my own liberation. You are Adham-oddharan (the redeemer of the fallen) and Patitpavan (the purifier of the afflicted); please liberate me!” Maharaj said, “Go and reside among those of our followers whose observances and vows (vartaman) are impure or lax.” The spirit pleaded, “O Maharaj, now that I have received Your direct divine darshan, please grant me salvation right now!” Shriji Maharaj then instructed him, “Go to Badrikashram and perform austerities there to attain the liberation of your soul.”
The ghost humbly requested, “O Maharaj! Please graciously place Your holy lotus feet (charanarvind) upon my chest.” Shriji Maharaj mercifully touched his chest with His lotus feet. Receiving the touch of Maharaj’s divine feet, the spirit departed from Ishvar’s body and proceeded to Badrikashram.
